Should the Feds ‘Get Involved’ In the California Homeless Crisis?
Should the federal government get involved with California’s homeless crisis?
What’s the story?
- President Donald Trump threatened California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) Wednesday with federal intervention if the Golden State can’t solve its homeless crisis.
“Governor Gavin N has done a really bad job on taking care of the homeless population in California. If he can’t fix the problem, the Federal Govt. will get involved!”
- Between 2010 and 2018, the homeless population in California grew by 7%. As of January 2018, the Golden State had an estimated 129,972 experiencing homelessness on any given day, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
- Last week, Newsom blamed HUD, and its secretary, Ben Carson, for the rise in homelessness in California.
- “Shelters solve sleep. Housing and supportive services solve homelessness. Housing first. You have a new director on the Interagency Council on Homelessness in the United States appointed by Donald Trump that says housing [comes] fourth,” said Newsom, referring to Robert Marbut, who took control of the council Dec. 3.
“They’re not serious about this issue. They’re playing politics with it ... There’s been nothing but division coming and emanating from the folks at HUD and the Trump administration.”

We’re ruining our cities and we have to be more structured and resources to these people and I think it’s mental health
Homelessness leads to many health conditions; without stability, the population is at a disadvantage. Homelessness significantly affects groups and sub-groups with pre-existing health conditions. Affordable housing cost and rent are a chronic risk factor affecting the disenfranchised community. Notwithstanding, the federal government should seek alternative funding to alleviate this feared condition and allow access to the Section 8 voucher program. The voucher system should stringent agreements. After all, "Housing is Health Care".
