This Week in Congress: Nuclear Waste Management & (Maybe) Stopping the Net Neutrality Rollback
Join us and tell your reps how you feel!
All eyes will be on the Senate Wednesday when Democrats attempt to force a vote on stopping the Trump administration’s rollback of net neutrality regulations. While it's unclear whether their effort will be stymied by procedural hurdles, there will be much more going on in the Capitol this week so let's take a look at the schedule!
The House will be in session Monday to vote on two bills related to burial benefits for veterans and the servicemember’s family. Tuesday will bring votes on a Senate-passed rollback of the CFPB’s auto dealer markup rule in addition to several small business bills, including bills to empower employees to buy an ownership stake in their business and expanding oversight of the SBA’s 7(a) loan program. On Wednesday the House will consider a bill to require states and local governments to publish information about their participants in their pretrial release programs funded with federal grants, in addition to a bill reforming merger law. It will end its week with a vote Thursday on a bill to reform nuclear waste management policy and move the Yucca Mountain licensing process forward.
The Senate starts its week Monday with a procedural vote on the nomination of Kurt Engelhardt to be U.S. Circuit Judge for the Fifth Circuit. A confirmation vote could come later Monday or Tuesday. On Wednesday Senate Democrats will file their discharge petition to force a vote on a rollback of the Trump administration’s net neutrality replacement in an effort to reinstate the Obama era rules. The 49 Senate Democrats have the support of Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) but will need the backing of 60 senators to force a vote, otherwise the matter will be tabled. Congress’s window to reverse the Trump administration’s net neutrality rollback closes on June 12. Its schedule for the rest of the week is yet to be announced.
