The Washington Post reports that a bipartisan group of four senators introduced legislation to protect special counsels from firing. Reports surfaced in news outlets today that the president attempted as recently as December 2017 to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller. The fate of the legislation now sits with Senate Judiciary Committee head, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), who has been skeptical of the constitutionality of previous bills.
The four lawmakers — Sens. Thom Tillis (R-NC), Christopher A. Coons (D-DE), Lindsey O. Graham (R-SC) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) — laid out a compromise plan with some key component parts:
Any order to fire a special counsel would be delayed by 10 days, giving the special counsel time to appeal the order to a panel of three federal judges.
During the 10-day period, no documents or materials related to the counsel’s investigation could be destroyed or staffing changes made.
Grassley has resisted scheduling committee time to markup such legislation, fearing previous iterations were unconstitutional. It is within the president’s authority to hire and fire members of the executive branch.
Sen. Coons told the Post Wednesday that Grassley seems open to this new, compromise legislation. Grassley spoke recently on Fox News, in response to tweets by the president referencing firing Mueller, that it would be "suicide for the president to want to talk about firing Mueller."
Do you support this compromise legislation, or not? Is limiting any president’s ability to fire a special counsel who may be investigating him or her an important level of protection, or is it overreach?

Please support this. We need some protection for Mueller. I have my doubts that republicans will do anything if this becomes a constitutional crisis.
Such a shame that a country that prides itself on the rule of law has to protect its upholders of law from a lawless president! How can we expect to be the beacon of a free and just society?
I’m strongly in favor of taking steps to protect Robert Mueller against executive overreach. Special counsel can’t manufacture evidence. If they turn up illegal activities, the president must answer for it. No one is above the law or we no longer have the protection of law as a nation
Something fishy is going on with our elections and both major parties are at fault. If our election was rigged, we need to know. Robert Mueller is doing important work for this nation, to find out what exactly is going on with this scandal-ridden administration. He needs protection from a president that wants to oust him, effectively obstructing justice. But justice must be served.
I look to Congress to act like -- well, like Congress! Instead of protecting the President from reality and from the results of his own misdoings, Congress should insist that laws be enforced and that America's institutions be protected. To allow the firing of Rod Rosenstein or Robert Mueller or the impeachment of Christopher Wray is to abandon the Constitution of the United States.
Of course we should not allow Mueller to be fired. We have the right to see the end product of his investigation into Trump’s illegal activities. If Trump tries to fire him then he is admitting guilt.
The idea that any president could fire the people empowered to hold them accountable to the rule of law is a terrifying vulnerability to tyranny. We need effective legislation to ensure that no American is above the law.
I ask my PA representatives to support this bill. Senate Majority Leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell, (R-KY), said only a day ago that he felt #45 would not fire special counsel Robert Mueller: “I haven’t seen a clear indication yet that we need to pass something to keep him (Mueller), from being removed because I don’t think that’s going to happen and that remains my view”. This after #45 noted that ‘many people’ told him to fire Mueller. Many people to #45 is most likely being ‘Me, Myself and I’! Given #45’s recent rants on the search of his attorney’s (Cohen), hotel room and office was furthering the “witch hunt”, and that the FBI “broke in to the offices”, which was an “attack on our country in a true sense”, action to protect Mueller is a must. Cohen himself attested that the FBI knocked on the door and sustained a professional and courteous attitude throughout the search. A search that was performed under a warrant. Honestly, all this would not be occurring if #45 bothered to understand his job; to defer to professionals for advice versus spouting and/or Tweeting outright lies that he gets from his own pompous mind!
Support this bill. Our democracy may depend on it.
Yes...and while you’re at it, please add some specificity to guide Amendment 25. Only a guilty or impaired president would behave in such an aberrant manner.
FULLY SUPPORT THIS BILL ALL THE WAY!!!
Please support this bill. It is critical that this investigation continues until its conclusion!
It would be nice to see that our representation in Washington DC is not as bad shit crazy as the president. Protect Robert Mueller now. Support the Best interest of the American public.
Of course this bill needs to be supported!!! Trump fires anyone who gets close to any information that would impeach him. He cannot be allowed to cover things up anymore. It is an absolute abuse of power to keep getting rid of people who are trying to give our nation the truth. A truth that we desperately need so we can be well informed to make the decision that would get rid of Trump. Something has to be done! If this bill will give us a step towards stopping this ridiculous boy playing at running our country, then let it be. The truth will set us free from being held hostage by this Anthony Fremont wannabe. America will send him to the cornfield.
I do not support this action because I believe that it does not address the core problem, which is the lack of definition and structure for a special investigation. This particular investigation should not have been approved to begin with due to lack of evidence, i.e., Russia collusion. What should happen going forward is once the proper evidence has been attained, the investigative team should only be given one directive, which is to prove or disprove and not have a free hand to venture to whatever they feel like. I also believe that there should be a timeframe set for the investigation.
#45 has long-standing ties to the mafia, a long tradition of racism, is profoundly impaired, and has shown his only concern to be his own profit and preening. Working to establish the fourth Reich with prison camps, destruction of free speech and a free press, and planning destruction of (or knowing nothing about) checks and balances, he would love to fire Robert Mueller before his corruption and financial ties to our enemy, Russia, and his admiration of brutal dictators is further revealed. Our freedoms are at risk with this bunch. The survival of the planet and all life is at risk with this corrupt Administration and #45. Please protect both Mr. Mueller and Rod Rosenstein from the despot in chief. And, get them out before it’s too late,
Unconstitutional. Congress does not have this power. The “special counsel” is investigating no crime. There is no limit to its scope. There is no limit to its time. There is no lo limit to its resources. It is a fraud. A witch hunt in search of a show trial. People who believe any of this deserve to live in a dictatorship.
I do NOT agree with this legislation!! It is dangerous and frightening to every American. Congress and the senates job is to over see the DOJ and the FBI and there is no accountability! When a country loses its justice department through corruption we will lose our republic! Mueller, Vey, and Rosenstein are dancing in corruption and you want to vote to keep them corrupt?? Why don't the four of you focus on accountability and corruption in the justice department! If you want to pass new legislation how about term limits on Congress and the Senate.
NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW. Special Counsels should be protected from firing. Unless of course, someone has something to hide........
It’s not going anywhere! He was appointed to investigated collusion with Russian officials in the 2016 election! Period! They can’t turn anything up so WE the taxpayer must shoulder the burden of an endless Witch Hunt to go after stuff that the investigation is not orders to do! Raiding an Attorney’s office and home as there is a guarantee in the constitution of Attorney/Client Privilage! Mueller should step up! Be a Man and admit he has not turned up any collusion! Quit sucking off the taxpayer!
