The Trump administration is unleashing new sanctions on seven Russian oligarchs with ties to President Vladimir Putin and 12 companies they own or control.
The Treasury Department, which announced the sanctions on Friday, is also taking aim at 17 senior government officials and a state-owned weapons trading company.
The move is the latest attempt by the U.S. to punish Moscow for interference in the 2016 presidential election and Russian aggressions in Crimea, Ukraine, and Syria.
"The Russian government operates for the disproportionate benefit of oligarchs and government elites," Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement. "Russian oligarchs and elites who profit from this corrupt system will no longer be insulated from the consequences of their government’s destabilizing activities."
In a statement released by the White House, President Donald Trump said:
"We cannot allow those seeking to sow confusion, discord, and rancor to be successful."
