U.S. Imposes New Sanctions on Putin Allies

by Countable | Updated on 4.6.18

What’s the story?

  • The Trump administration is unleashing new sanctions on seven Russian oligarchs with ties to President Vladimir Putin and 12 companies they own or control.

  • The Treasury Department, which announced the sanctions on Friday, is also taking aim at 17 senior government officials and a state-owned weapons trading company.

What are the sanctions for?

  • The move is the latest attempt by the U.S. to punish Moscow for interference in the 2016 presidential election and Russian aggressions in Crimea, Ukraine, and Syria.

  • "The Russian government operates for the disproportionate benefit of oligarchs and government elites," Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement. "Russian oligarchs and elites who profit from this corrupt system will no longer be insulated from the consequences of their government’s destabilizing activities."

  • In a statement released by the White House, President Donald Trump said:

"We cannot allow those seeking to sow confusion, discord, and rancor to be successful."

What do you think?

Do you support these sanctions? Would you like to see tougher sanctions against Moscow? Is the U.S. doing enough to prepare against future cyberattacks? Hit Take Action and tell your reps, then share your thoughts below.

“Smoke and Mirrors”. Yeah. Like letting the Russians waltz into Crimea and Eastern Ukraine. Like giving them control of US Uranium. Like letting them take the lead in Syria. Like giving their client state Iran freedom to develop nuclear weapons. Like hamstringing our Nukular (intentional) and Naval forces over 8 years. Like doing NOTHING while all of this supposed “collusion” was going on and BARAMA had the reigns of power. Please. Don’t pee down my back and tell me it’s raining.

Not enough. Trump needs to quit being afraid of putting Putin down. He needs to actually care about the country he is supposed to be leading & quit asking Putin’s permission to do anything. If Trump doesn’t quit what he’s doing, our country is going to be lost. OR. MAYBE THAT IS WHAT THEY ARD PLANNiNG!!!!

It seems like we are taking diplomatic dance steps calculated to look like we are taking a brave stand while the actual effect is negligible. Sanctions against a weapons trading company? The US produces arms, when would we buy arms from Russia?

We need an investigation into the connections between neighboring Russia country Azerbaijan and ongoing media interference impacting the Arizona 8 special election. At minimum, I would like to know why Google Trends is showing more interest in the upcoming Arizona district 8 special election resonating from Azerbaijan than in the US.

“Put the hurt 😢 on the Oligarchs and Russians elites," The sanctions are the latest attempt by the U.S. to punish Moscow for interference in the 2016 presidential election and Russian aggressions in Crimea, Ukraine, and Syria. I’m in support these sanctions as a start, but I’d like to see tougher sanctions, being taken against Moscow and Putin. The sanctions are a good idea to show people, countries and companies that they will suffer consequences for their actions. We can’t allow them to attack our country and get away with interfering with our elections.

It's about damn time. However, Comrade Bone Spurs claims he's been the toughest on Russia.. It seems he likes to claim credit for a lot of things he shouldn't.

Where is Mr Trumps voice on this? Mnuchin today, the commerce secretary yesterday, but crickets from our fearless leader. The sanctions were not defined in this posting. So what exactly are their consequences?

We are deluding ourselves if we believe this will suffice to gain Putin’s attention. The full court press has to be equal to the sanctions imposed upon North Korea. Half measures will only encourage more hostility from Russia, the new Cold War has begun and the enemy has infiltrated the Executive Branch and has proxies in the NRA. Instead of patrolling the border we should be maintaining surveillance on these Executives until the investigation has cleared them from prosecution.

"We cannot allow those seeking to sow confusion, discord, and rancor to be successful." For once trump’s spoken the truth! Mnuchin needs to look inward in his talks about oligarchs and corruption and get this whole administration out of the White House. Oh, were they talking about Russia? Bwu-ha-HA! Oh man! And trump supporters buy this cheap obfuscation from this scum?

Just another Putin pre-approved move for the Manchurian to save face. We all know the Manchurian would never truly do anything against Putin or do anything to make Putin angry—since Putin is the dominant in the relationship and he has dirt on the Manchurian.

I support any and all sanctions against putin and his oligarchs. They are street thugs and must be dealt with firmly. They have run around the world poisoning people while the world has sat idly by. Chemical weapons are a stain on humanity and always used by evil leaders that are never held accountable. It is time for global leaders that commit such crimes to be held accountable.

Why is there apparently still outside meddling in Arizona 8th Congressional District special election by folks in Azerbaijan? This is the second week now that this seeming inconsequential country has repeatedly shown a higher interest in the upcoming special election than the US has. Also, I am noticing the google news search results are being skewed.

Putting sanctions on Russian Oligarchs May have little effect on Putin now that we have given him Syria and now he has enticed Turkey into his widening influence in the Middle East. Russia and China are becoming the 2 world powers as they can get surplus goods from each other, the Baltic States and China,s increasing influence in Africa. Right now the only people suffering are. The American farmers and next consumers. Russia, China and America are in a new arms build up Trump needs to shut up and listen to his advisors instead of his dictatorial tweets. GOD HELP US!!!

Why? Where is the conclusive evidence? We have actual evidence of collusion with Saudi Arabia and Israel. What about sanctions on them? Why are we restarting the Cold War?
