I’m sure everyone is familiar with the feeling of lying in bed at night unable to fall asleep – thinking of the commitments and deadlines that come with the new morning, calculating exactly how much rest you’ll get if you fall asleep at this precise moment. Nearly one in every five Americans deal with sleep or wakefulness disorder, which has led the CDC to consider this a national epidemic. Aside from disease, pain, and medication, here are some common causes of sleeplessness:
- America’s Most Wanted: A good night’s sleep
Becoming a prisoner to your television – or any electronic device’s screen for that matter – can keep you from being a frequent visitor to dreamland.
- Night sweats before bedtime
While physical activity has shown to improve sleep quality, high intensity exercise three hours or less before bedtime can decrease your chances of nodding off.
- A river runs through it
Plain and simple: what goes in, must come out. If you’re running for the bathroom multiple times a night, you may want to cease liquid consumption three hours before bedtime. Of course, the obvious goes without saying, caffeine may keep you awake and acts as a diuretic.
- Hungry for insomnia
Doing your best impression of eight-time hot dog eating champion, Joey Chestnut, right before bedtime is never a good idea. If you do eat, opt for a healthy carbohydrate-rich snack which will stimulate melatonin production.
- Sawing oversized logs
Many people believe snoring is a fact of life; however, this is one of the biggest disrupters of sleep. If it’s light snoring, it could be attributed to sleeping on your back, being overweight, or medications. If you start getting complaints from your neighbors across the street, it may be time to see a doctor.
If any one of these factors are impacting your sleep, they may also be putting your health at risk by increasing your risk of cognitive decline, heart disease and several other health factors.
