The Daily Countable: 🎖 Boots on the border & 🚢 China trade war fears

by Countable | Updated on 4.5.18

Happy Thursday, friends.

How are you spending Spring Break? If you're in the National Guard, you may be headed down to Mexico. Not Cabo or Tijuana, though—President Trump has signed a proclamation to send National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border. “We’re going to be doing things militarily," the president said. "Until we can have a wall and proper security, we’re going to be guarding our border with the military." Read why Trump's taking this sudden action here.

On the Radar

  • One of the reasons for the border troops: Honduras. For the last several days, the president has been tweeting warnings about a "caravan" of 1,000 migrants – mostly from Honduras – approaching the southern border. Here's what you need to know about the country.

  • Meanwhile, on a different continent: The Trump administration has published a list of nearly 1,300 Chinese exports – worth around $50 billion annually – that it intends to slap with 25 percent tariffs. Products include flat-screen TVs, aircraft parts, batteries, and medical devices. In response, Beijing announced it would place a 25 percent import tax on 106 U.S. products, including orange juice, pork, and aircraft. Click here to read about the looming trade war.

Under the Radar

  • Trump signed it, but now he wants to take it back? We're talking about the $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill that he signed into law in late March. Facing pressure from fiscal conservatives and supporters who are disappointed the "big beautiful wall" isn't included in the package, President Trump is developing plans to take some of it back. Read all about the process of "rescission" here.

Your Gov at a Glance 👀

The White House: President Trump in DC & WV

  • In the late afternoon, the president participated in a round table discussion on tax reform in White Sulphur Springs, WV.

The House of Representatives: Out

  • The House will return Tuesday, April 10th.

The Senate: Out

  • The Senate will return Monday, April 9th.

But Wait! There's More!

And, in the End…

As always, we appreciate you joining us on this ship of state. Any direction you want us to sail? Any ports of call you want us to visit? Any non-ship metaphors you want us to use instead? Let us know; we're here for you, mateys.

He doesn’t even understand the laws. He is a false profit. Thinking he can have the loudest voice telling people to be afraid, then saying only he can make things better. Be smart people and don’t listen to his voice. Listen to your heart.

Will troops on the border keep immigrants out or keep Americans in? The emperor wishes absolute control over everyone and everything while scapegoating and bullying anyone he can. Starting a trade war will tank the economy for us peons. Reprehensible behavior’s from a reprobate. Get him out before it’s too late, please.

Trump just threatened an additional $100 Billion in tariffs on China. Trump’s first round of tariffs sent the stock market on a downward crashing spiral! Get rid of the lunatic before he creates a depression that will dwarf the 1929 depression!

This anti-leader is the worse person for the job at the worse possible time. With no compassion, no morals, no values, full of narcissism, greed, and hate, his rambling misguided policies of the moment will likely have lasting and devastating results for Americans. Anyone who elevated this man does so at their own peril. Worse, we as Americans are all in this boat together. I wish people would analyze how Trumps trade war and backward facing policies actually impact their ability to be successful and raise their quality of life. Trump is the swamp on steroids. When will people see him for what he is, a fraud!

We need to stop immigrants from coming across the border illegally but most of all we need to stop what they are bringing with them. Carfentanyl is nothing more than a weaponized form of opioids and is very capable of being used as a weapon of mass destruction. The border needs to be secured if for no other reason than to curb the influx of carfentanyl.

I guess I don’t understand why immigration has become the reason for all our problems in the US? We have a big gap between what the 1% make and what the rest of us make. The huge tax breaks for corporations and immigrants who want to come and work jobs no one else want are the problem. This is such a smokescreen! Education, healthcare, food, clean water! Poverty in the US these are the issues!

As usual, Democrats are FAR more concerned with criminal invaders than with their constituents.

Since this problem has been purposefully aided by Democrats with the southern invasion, it is time to end it!! Support the President elected. Just the worst parts of America did not vote for him, while the working class did! Stop the invasion now!

Why are there so many people who do nothing but attack the leaders but have no alternate way to accomplish what needs to be accomplished. Look at the items you buy...MADE IN CHINA. Remember when we refused to buy anything that said “Made in Japan”? The people jumping all over Trump weren’t even alive during those times. Now China owns much of the debt that the US owes.

On the subject of trade war with China... our community depends on the shipping of automobiles, soybeans & grain from the Port of Grays Harbor to China. The hit to our economy would be disastrous. If the US administration wants to reduce the trade gap, why not bring home the businesses who moved their companies overseas to use cheaper foreign resources?

Trump is waging a trade war we cannot win. The economy of the United States switches from manufacturing to service and intellectual property years ago. Trump refuses to consider this because he made a promise to his more uninformed base he would bring all those manufacturing jobs back. He can’t! And he will tank the economy by trying. And when he fails, he will try to blame it on Obama.

Border security is important, but needs to be proportional to actual impact. There needs to be more justification for military presence during a time of record low crossings than a group of people smaller than the population of many high schools walking in the direction of the border, most of whom are openly planning to settle in Mexico (not US) or apply legally at entry ports for refugee status. Illegal entry is less of a problem than overstayed visas, and our military would likely be better deployed elsewhere. How about sending Guard to Puerto Rico to get IV bag factories and the rest of the island powered up again? It’s true there may be a legitimate threat and the caravan is a front, but that should be decided by those with info and experience not someone with a history of ignoring advice and facts.

This whole mess is the result of an incompetent president and impotent congress, both democrats and republicans. Neither party looks out for the good of the country, instead it’s about power and money in their personal pockets. Troops on the border is a complete waste of tax payer money. The Chinese trade war is the incompetence of a bully that thought he could intimidate his way to a deal that he is learning world leaders will not bow to. SWAMP.

From the Dems, I want to know why they refuse to assist in Arizona District 8 Special Election. 💥When seeking a 2/3 majority to have Trump declared unfit, every vote matters. ⚙️At minimum, I would think Rep. Raskin would want to assist Tipirneni simply because it would help his own chances of House Bill 1987 succeeding. 🤗Thank u Congressman Khanna for your show of unity.
