What Was Happening in U.S. Politics the Last Time Washington, D.C. Hosted the World Series?
Are you excited for the World Series to return to Washington, D.C.?
A World Series game will be played in our nation’s capital for the first time since 1933 on Friday night, as the Washington Nationals will look to extend their two-game lead on the Houston Astros in Game 3. It’s been 86 years since the championship series of America’s pastime made an appearance in D.C., so here’s a look back at what was happening in American politics the last time the Capitol played host to the Fall Classic:
- President Franklin D. Roosevelt (D) is sworn in on March 4th (the last inauguration on that date because of the 20th Amendment's ratification). In his inauguration speech, he declares that, “The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.”
- Congress began enacting New Deal legislation in response to the Great Depression, including the establishment of the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and the Civil Works Administration. Congress & FDR also established the Securities Exchange Commission and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to prevent future financial crises. (A pair of other New Deal bills enacted in 1933, the Agricultural Adjustment Act and the National Industrial Recovery Act, were eventually ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.)
- The U.S. moved off of the gold standard by denying creditors the ability to demand payment in gold.
- The U.S. and the Soviet Union established formal diplomatic relations.
- The 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution took effect, repealing Prohibition.
- The Dept. of Justice acquired the the Army Disciplinary Barracks on Alcatraz as part of a plan to incorporate “The Rock” as a federal penitentiary.
- Albert Einstein arrived in the U.S. as a refugee from Nazi Germany.
What happened in the 1933 World Series? The New York Giants defeated the Washington Senators in 5 games of the best-of-seven series. The Senators’ only win came in Game 3 at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C.
