This Week in Congress: Preventing Foreign Interference in U.S. Elections and Censuring Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) for Misleading Conduct
How do you feel about this week's congressional agenda? What else should Congress vote on?
Lawmakers return on Monday to kick off a work week that will be cut short when Congress pays its respects to the late Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), who will lie in state in state at the Capitol rotunda on Thursday.
The House’s agenda features Monday votes on four bipartisan bills that aim to promote small business programs. At a time to be determined early in the week, the House will also take up a resolution that would censure Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) for misrepresenting the call between President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s president, and lying to the public about when he came into contact with the Ukraine whistleblower. The rest of the House’s week will be focused primarily on bills to prevent foreign interference in U.S. elections and crack down on the use of anonymous shell companies, although it may vote on a resolution expressing opposition to hosting the G7 summit at Trump’s Doral, Florida resort that was tentatively added to the schedule before Trump reversed his decision to host it there.
The Senate convenes Monday for a procedural vote on allowing the Republic of North Macedonia to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. If it succeeds, a vote to ratify North Macedonia’s NATO membership would follow later in the week. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) also set up potential procedural votes on the nomination of an ambassador to the United Nations & other international organizations in Geneva, Switzerland, and fiscal year 2020 spending bills.
