The Daily Countable: 👣Trump's flip-flops on DACA... and, 🍎teachers + guns = liability problems?🔫

by Countable | 4.2.18

So much to talk about, so little brainspace, friends. That's why we're doing what we're doing here at team Countable: bringing your democracy to you.

On the Radar

  • President Trump has renewed his attacks on Mexico and Democrats, tweeting on Monday that the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was "dead."
  • Trump’s latest comments follow his tweets on Easter Sunday, where the president declared "NO MORE DACA DEAL!" and lambasted Mexico for “doing very little, if not NOTHING, at stopping people from flowing into Mexico through their Southern Border.” For the latest on DACA, click here.

  • EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt lived nearly rent-free in a condominium connected to a prominent fossil fuel lobbyist who deals with issues overseen by his agency. Pruitt – already under fire for his lavish travel expenses – paid just $50 for an apartment in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington. That is less than a third of the market price of similar properties, and puts Pruitt in possible violation of federal ethics rules. Read what the EPA and critics of Pruitt are saying here.

Under the Radar

Guns. We've got two stories for you:

  • In the wake of the Parkland, FL, school shooting, multiple states are contemplating legislation to train and arm teachers and other school personnel. But even states who legalized the concept years ago are running into limitations imposed by liability insurers, affecting their ability to enact those laws. If insurance companies won’t cover school districts who arm teachers, what happens next? Click here.

  • Post-Parkland, states have been pursuing new gun laws with a renewed sense of urgency. Many are enacting additional gun-control measures, but a handful are expanding gun rights. Legislative sessions are ending soon, closing a window for action. Wondering what’s happening in your state? Head here.
