The Daily Countable: 👣Trump's flip-flops on DACA... and, 🍎teachers + guns = liability problems?🔫

by Countable | Updated on 4.3.18

So much to talk about, so little brainspace, friends. That's why we're doing what we're doing here at team Countable: bringing your democracy to you.

On the Radar

  • President Trump has renewed his attacks on Mexico and Democrats, tweeting on Monday that the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was "dead."
  • Trump’s latest comments follow his tweets on Easter Sunday, where the president declared "NO MORE DACA DEAL!" and lambasted Mexico for “doing very little, if not NOTHING, at stopping people from flowing into Mexico through their Southern Border.” For the latest on DACA, click here.

  • EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt lived nearly rent-free in a condominium connected to a prominent fossil fuel lobbyist who deals with issues overseen by his agency. Pruitt – already under fire for his lavish travel expenses – paid just $50 for an apartment in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington. That is less than a third of the market price of similar properties, and puts Pruitt in possible violation of federal ethics rules. Read what the EPA and critics of Pruitt are saying here.

Under the Radar

Guns. We've got two stories for you:

  • In the wake of the Parkland, FL, school shooting, multiple states are contemplating legislation to train and arm teachers and other school personnel. But even states who legalized the concept years ago are running into limitations imposed by liability insurers, affecting their ability to enact those laws. If insurance companies won’t cover school districts who arm teachers, what happens next? Click here.

  • Post-Parkland, states have been pursuing new gun laws with a renewed sense of urgency. Many are enacting additional gun-control measures, but a handful are expanding gun rights. Legislative sessions are ending soon, closing a window for action. Wondering what’s happening in your state? Head here.

But Wait! There's More!

And, in the End…

It's the second week of Congress's two week recess. As soon as our moles in the Capitol begin to whisper lawmakers upcoming agenda, we'll report it directly to you. Watch this space!

President Trump at the state of the union offered a path to citizenship for 1.8 million DACA recipients. President Trump didn’t flip-flop on DACA. It’s the role of Congress to pass immigration legislation. The President has made it very clear he and his party wanted a DACA deal. However, no Democrats wanted to put their name on any DACA legislation. You’re statement is bullshit and fake news.

http://time.com/4822956/donald-trump-tweets-rasmussen-poll-barack-obama/ Fact check. My boy Barrack was ahead of where Lil donnie is right now. And yes he did flip flop on DACA. He tied it to legislation he knew democrats and Middle conservatives would never go for so he could keep his hands clean. The only reason people believe anything he says is because they have a double digit IQ like he does.

So who exactly is concerned about liability for arming teachers? The families of those slaughtered at Parkland have an excellent case for suing the Broward County School Board, The Broward County Sheriff and the Department of Justice/FBI for gross negligence and dereliction of duty. So why are some worried more about liability than protecting our students? Please explain!

If we’re going to start considering teachers to be Terminator style action heroes, then you sure better pay them well. Are you expecting them to pay for their guns, ammo AND school supplies? Government, you’re a joke. Wake up and join the adults for coffee.

45 killed DACA. 45 refused to even hear compromises on DACA, during his 's-hole countries' meeting. Then 45 blames democrats for DACA's revocation! huh?

This president and his administration are grossly under-qualified and inexperienced in their roles. We are in the most dangerous times of our lives because they are in control of of our demise. They are not working in the best interests of all of the people. They are rife with corruption, falsehoods, and self-interest. Our taxpayer money is being used inappropriately. I am so saddened that nothing is being done to correct these circumstances. It seems that our democracy is leaning more toward a dictatorship, and Congress seems to support this move.

Let’s STOP the bickering and get immigration laws completed!! We are heading in the wrong direction and soon this country is going down the toilet. I don’t care if a person likes Trump or not. Our country and Constitution comes first!! Congress must work together now!!

Oh where to start...as for DACA, Trump wanted it tied to a border wall which is a worthless waste of money. Furthermore, he is the one who keeps putting Americans against each other by making statements that single out and label rather that bringing us together by putting opposing views together to work something out! As for arming teachers, that is the most ridiculous thing ever! How about starting by paying teachers more, stop diverting funds to charter schools to help make public schools better. Charter and private schools should be a choice that parents choose to pay extra for not something that every taxpayer has to fund! Honestly, of the multitude of teachers I have encountered over the decades, maybe a handful could keep their wits about them enough to handle a gun in response to a situation like Parkland or SandyHook, but I don’t want my child in a class where the teacher is expected to handle a situation as if she/he has swat training! As for Pruitt violating ethics, are we surprised here? This man is in charge of the EPA. The governing group that that he choose to sue multiple times! He doesn’t want to protect the environment. He wants to dismantle the EPA and is being supported by big businesses to do so! Wake Up!

The current president's statements and conclusions are so often ridden with logical fallacies, it's difficult to bear. Claiming the Democratic party is against DACA because they won't agree to his border wall conditions? Red herring, slippery slope, and either/or fallacies come to mind. I apologize, but the argument is therefore null. I have yet to see data showing such a wall as he requests would prove effective, let alone practical. What I see is someone unwilling to have patience for compromise and attempting to put the blame on one party, using any tactic–whether reasonable or not–because they don't get their way. It takes two to tango, and this kind of tango takes time. Re: arming teachers — I don't think someone has any right to argue *for* this unless they are or have been a certified teacher and worked as one. If this person is in some other way qualified to speak on the matter, they should speak on the research and experience lending credence to their opinion on the matter first.

Trump-as POTUS...ended the DACA system...and NO ONE ELSE!...don’t forget. Then he reneged on earlier agreement with Democrats, didn’t he. He is consistent as Prevaricator in Chief, to our embarrassment & shame through out the World.

Mr Trump has NO opinions, thoughts, ideals. He tunes in and waits for the magic box to tell him how to feel ... and he’s off to the races. The Age of Trump will be a crazy pamphlet in history.

The king of flip flop does it again. He wants DACA. He doesn’t want DACA. Who can tell? Right now he is willing to use people’s lives as a pawn in his dim witted chess game. He’s hurt because he can’t get his wall so he is threatening. The only thing he is consistent on is Putin.

Fully fund the border wall. Now. This is a national security issue. It’s time “Republicans” found a backbone and actually do what they already know is right. Stop letting the US Chamber of Commerce and Schumer / Pelosi push you around.

We need Congress to come together, and pass the immigration reform now. End the chain migration and the lottery. We need to stop the 1000 illegals coming to our country. This is getting very scary.
