Trump: ‘DACA is dead’

by Countable | Updated on 4.2.18

What’s the story?

  • President Donald Trump has renewed his attacks on Mexico and Democrats, tweeting on Monday that the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was "dead."
  • Trump’s latest comments follow his tweets on Easter Sunday, where the president declared "NO MORE DACA DEAL!" and lambasted Mexico for “doing very little, if not NOTHING, at stopping people from flowing into Mexico through their Southern Border.”

Why does it matter?

  • During the White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday, the president continued his criticism of DACA, claiming the Democrats had abandoned the undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children:

"The Democrats have really let them down, they’ve really let them down. They had this great opportunity, and Democrats have really let them down—it’s a shame. Now people are taking advantage of DACA. It should have never happened."

  • It was unclear what the president was referring to, as his administration ended the DACA program. And last month, Democrats offered to provide $25 billion for Trump’s border wall in exchange for a DACA extension. Trump rejected this deal.

  • Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) tweeted Monday:

What do you think?

What DACA deal, if any, do you want to see? Hit Take Action and tell your reps.
