The Daily Countable: Who's In & Who's Out? Russians Expelled, Trans Recruits Banned & Tariff Exemptions

by Countable | Updated on 3.27.18

Hello, Countable friends!

Congress is on their spring holiday break, which can mean a slow news cycle in Washington, historically. But between President Trump and the wonders (and perils) of the internet, the fun never stops anymore, does it? If you're a news wonk, anyway. Like yesterday's news that 60 Russian diplomats were expelled over the poisoning of a former Russian spy in U.K.. That's a big turnaround from the president's critiques of NATO and refusal to impose sanctions on Russia.

If you have thoughts about what this latest salvo means in the ongoing love-hate relationship between the administration and Russia (and we love how you always have so many thoughts!), follow the link and share them with us!

On the Radar

  • President Trump released an order that would formally ban most transgendered people from serving in the military. The White House said troops with a history or diagnosis of “gender dysphoria” – those who may require medical treatment to transition to another gender – “are disqualified from military service except under certain limited circumstances.” Will this ban hold up in court more than the previous one? Click here to learn why it might.

  • Trump has granted temporary exemptions on his steel and aluminum tariffs: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, the European Union, Mexico, and South Korea will not be subject to the trade penalties. The tariffs will be suspended until May 1, 2018. Read the rationale behind the policy shift here.

  • Does any of this make you want to switch your political party affiliation? You wouldn't be alone: politicians crossing the aisle happens more often than you might think. Which is why Countable is asking: "Switching Parties: Reasonable or Treasonable?" Read about some historical party swappers then add your voice to the conversation.

Under the Radar

The omnibus bill was/is by no means "under the radar." But certain sections of it aren't getting as much press as others. Included in the $1.6 trillion dollar spending bill was a record $4.6 billion to fight the opioid epidemic in fiscal year 2018. Despite that figure being approximately three times what the federal government is currently spending, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle fear it won’t be enough. Read what their concerns are here.

Your Gov at a Glance 👀

The White House: President Trump in DC

  • The president meets with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin today.
  • He also will sign a proclamation for Education and Sharing Day.

The House of Representatives: Out

  • The House will return Tuesday, April 10th.

The Senate: Out

  • The Senate will return Monday, April 9th.

Next Week's Preview

  • Congress will be observing the second week of a two week recess for Easter and Passover.

But Wait! There's More!

And, in the End…

In honor of Education and Sharing day let's remember another basic rule we all learned in grade school. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." We hope you are good to yourselves, always, and each other. It's brutal out there, otherwise.

When will we realize the Trump experiment is a failure and end it? 1600 is no place for a clueless amateur.

Very excited to see more failures from the Trump administration. In time he will see his undoing. I’m thrilled that many old guard reps have been retiring early or resigning. Let’s keep washing out the old ideas that no longer hold up to today’s society. Trump is a failure, his agenda is a joke. I don’t attribute the economy and job gains to Trump, because we have seen fluctuations in every single administration. This is all blowing smoke up the American people’s fanny. Truth be told, nothing about Trump is good. “Grab the p—y.”

The never ending religious theological hypocrites never cease to amaze me. In my opinion We have a vindictive lying allegedly womanizing unfaithful adulterous bigot and all you can say is give him a mulligan or it’s just Locke room talk or it just man talk. Bullshit is more like it. If this had been any other past president you people would be wanting to ride them out of Washington on a rail tarred and feathered. Truly despicable. But oh yeah feed on the crumbs he doles out now. When the tax breaks expire and it all catches up and what you get back now doubles what you pay in the future and yet the rich and corporations still real in the benefits you still going to hold this alleged philanderer on a pedestal? Get a grip. Of course again I state it is my opinion. He hasn’t taken that right away yet with one of his idiot executive orders. But I am waiting.

Happy Easter! I hope you will find a Bible preaching church Sunday to celebrate the Lord Jesus Christ’s resurrection. Jesus God’s Son died on the cross for our sins, and arose three days later as He said He would. “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭15:1-4‬ ‭ “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John‬ ‭3:16‬

President Trump has been a resounding success thus far. The economy is booming. The working class is seeing more money in their paychecks. The military will get the largest increase in spending. The LGBT agenda is dead. Religious freedom is alive. The power is returning to the people. It’s a great time to be in America. Have a blessed Passover and Easter Sunday.

This trans discrimination is disgusting. Trans military members work just as hard as anyone else, sacrifice just as much for our country and this is how we treat them?

This is a farce. The countries that Trump made exempt from the tariffs will be on the short list for the creation of a black market. Countries like Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, the European Union, Mexico, and South Korea are now going to reap huge profits from the sales of steel and aluminum being sold to nations that are supposed to be banned of sales that would otherwise have huge tariffs.

If you are willing to fight and die for your country then you should be allowed to do so. The idea that it is more expensive to have trans soldiers is an outright lie supported by those too grounded in religious belief to think practically.

If prosperity and freedom mean anything to you and your family members the socialist democratic agenda would not be something you would want to really support in the future. It would be a big mistake going back to the way that the democrats governed the country in the eight years previously. Less money in your pocket higher taxes more infringements on your freedom with higher crime and a weaker military not to mention the out of control illegal immigration. Do we really all want to go back to that stuff again.

Donald Trump is 71 years old. He is proudly, profoundly ignorant of government, governing and has made it clear that he has no interest in learning even the basics. Government requires compromise, patience, thoughtfulness and adaptability: qualities he utterly lacks. He doesn’t read. He doesn’t study. He’s incapable of reflection, of rigorous analysis. It’s been a year of this and he hasn’t grown into the office, he’s made it smaller. Public discourse, which has been small for a long time, has gotten even smaller. Complex ideas, public policy debates can’t and shouldn’t be boiled down to 280 characters. Character matters. Empathy matters. Kindness, decency, respect matters. Being disrespectful is not “telling it like it is”. Hypocrisy knows no party, gender or color. I can think of Democratic politicians that have been caught up in various scandals just as easily as Republican politicians, from John Edwards, Eliot Spitzer and Anthony Weiner for example. Until people demand better character from their leaders, America will continue to decline. It takes courage to stand up against what is wrong and there is very little courage in elected officials right now. I can understand the appeal of someone who’s willing to be blunt and speak truth to power, to be forceful and strong willed. Donald Trump is not that person. There is far more to being president than the title. A leader takes responsibility for their mistakes. A leader leads by example, not by meaningless, hollow words. A leader is someone who doesn't deceive, deflect and distract from the truth. A leader works to reduce people's suffering instead of intentionally inflicting it. A leader lifts people up instead of putting them down. A leader tries to unite people for the common good, rather than divide them with petty, hateful rhetoric. A leader doesn’t use his platform to muffle dissent. A leader is capable of feeling empathy and does not ridicule, disparage or humiliate others just to feed their own ego. Donald Trump is an aberration. He may have the title but he should never be considered a leader. Trump's anger, vindictiveness, jealousy and sheer sense of malice only makes his predecessors look better in retrospect. Trump is simply too small, too petty for the office. I'm not talking hand size, I'm talking about spirit. Heart. He has none. The presidency only makes you more of who you are. Power reveals who you are at your core. America has survived 2 World Wars, slavery, domestic terrorism, riots, Jim Crow, McCarthyism, the Great Depression, the Great Recession, 9/11, assassinations, a civil war, Korea, Vietnam and Watergate but America could be brought down by Trump. That’s the tragedy here.

I have, in my mature years, come to view the Golden Rule as inconsiderate and even somewhat narcissistic. I don’t necessarily want people to do unto me as they would have me do unto them, as it could well be exactly what I would NOT want. I now try to live by what I call the Platinum Rule: Do unto others as they would have you do unto them. That requires me to quit assuming that I know what is best for them and actually talk to them in order to learn what THEY want. It doesn’t mean I always give them everything they want, but at least I ‘m not assuming that I know what they want or, worse, ought to want.

Question’s: Obama appropriated money from the Executive Office. How come Trump can’t for The Wall ? On the Census. Here is another opportunity to get back to The Constitution. The Constitution only requires numbers not this other info to be taken for purposes only of #’s of Representatives in Congress.

We are in dangerous times. The inexperience, ignorance, AND stupidity of this administration is scary. The backward thinking will drive the country to a dangerous place . Transgender troops pose no threat to our military. They are performing a job not a lifestyle. Wake up America.
