What's Congress Voting On? Week of April 3, 2017
Join us and tell your reps how you feel!
Judge Neil Gorsuch's nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court will lead the news in Congress this week, with the Judiciary Committee's vote on Monday expected to precede a Friday confirmation vote on the Senate floor. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has insisted that Democratic support for the nominee will ultimately determine whether the so-called "nuclear option" — changing Senate rules to allow Supreme Court nominations to advance without surpassing a 60-vote threshold — would be deployed. So far, four Democratic senators have said they'd either back Gorsuch or oppose a filibuster of his nomination, which combined with the chamber's 52 Republicans leaves them four votes shy of a filibuster-proof majority.
Meanwhile in the House, lawmakers will vote Monday on relatively uncontroversial suspension bills, including two related to North Korea's sponsorship of terrorism and ballistic missile testing that will foreshadow a discussion point at this week's meeting between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Bills related to weather forecasting technology, extending a program aimed at expanding veterans' access to private sector healthcare, and employee stock ownership will receive votes later in the week.
