Retail Giants Balk at Trump Tariffs

by Countable | Updated on 3.21.18

What’s the story?

  • 25 large retail companies - including Costco, Target, and Walmart – are urging President Donald Trump to reconsider imposing tariffs on goods imported from China.

  • According to reports, the U.S. is planning to slap $60 billion worth of tariffs on Chinese imports to punish Beijing for intellectual property theft.

What are the companies saying?

  • The letter - which was also signed by Big Lots, Best Buy, and Macy’s – said the planned tariffs would "punish American working families with higher prices on household basics like clothing, shoes, electronics, and home goods."

  • The retail giants added:

"As you continue to investigate harmful technology and intellectual property practices, we ask that any remedy carefully consider the impact on consumer prices. We must do right by American families while also addressing harmful technology practices."

What do you think?

Should the Trump administration reconsider imposing tariffs on China? Impose lower tariffs? Impose even higher tariffs? Is there another (better) way to punish Beijing for intellectual property theft? Hit Take Action and tell your reps, then share your thoughts below.

These corporations are CORRECT. We have NO MANUFACTURERS IN THIS COUNTRY. WE ARE A CONSUMER BASED ECONOMY. If Trump wants manufacturing in this country he should create monetary incentives for people/companies to start up manufacturing and then continue to help them until they get established. TAKE THE SUBSIDY PAYMENTS WE GIVE THE OIL & GAS COS AND TELEPHONE COMPANIES AND USE Them to pay for the incentives. NO TARIFFS. WE, AS CONSUMERS, END UP PAYING FOR THEM.

I am for free trade. Our economy depends on it. Tariffs will do much more harm than good and should not be used.

The real villains are US corporations and the political leadership that destroyed our manufacturing for their own profits. It’s great if we can buy cheaper items, but the people need decent jobs to buy these goods. Blame short term business profits for long term economic decline.

Americans want cheap stuff. Any products made in America will be cheap only at the expense of the worker. Can’t have a living wage AND cheap stuff. So we buy cheap stuff from China, where workers live in conditions Americans would not want to live in. So guess what? We can’t have cheap stuff AND care about America and Americans. Suggestion: tax the wealthy equivalent to what the middle class pay with respect to their income and cost of living, eliminate middle-man insurance companies and provide inexpensive medical care, make college free so young Americans don’t start life in debt. Then we could all afford more expensive American made products, and support the American middle class.

I’m not a fan of tariffs, but you know what? Fuck Cosco and Walmart. Wal -mart pays someone over $100K a year to help their employees apply for food stamps and Medicaid. Free market capitalism.

This country has turned into a dumping ground for foreign made junk! While working for a goner company I was sent out to California for a 1 1/2 weeks of classes right next to the Port of Los Angeles! With Long Beach Port just south of that! I took pics on some days with huge container ships pulling in loaded with containers about 20 stories high with all the containers saying “New China Shipping”! I have the pics but can’t share on Countable! All crap that will end up at Walmart! For all of you to buy and help fill not only the coffers of COMMUNIST CHINA! But Greedy American corporate exec that pay little to whatever employees the have here! Now I’m a Conservative but a blue collar one as I’ve been lucky to have the knowledge and experience to work well paying jobs most of my life! What the government has allowed and that’s Democrats and Republicans alike, over the decades is horrible! Taking money from all kinds of big corporations and stuffing their pockets! Like I said in previous posts, I’d love to hire young American kids if they had their heads on their shoulders and pass a drug test! But getting back to the Tariffs? Punish those companies that moved their manufacturing overseas! Especially Communist China! Or any other Communist country for that matter!

Seriously? Make America great again by destroying the economy, put people out of work. That’s trumps grand plan. Treat the us like his businesses, f * * k it up, no problem we will just file bankruptcy. Oh wait we can’t do that we’ve pissed off the rest of the world, who would bail us out? Oh no problem he will just ask Putin for an advance on his allowance. Now I know why the baseball caps were really Red.

Trump doesn't know business. Tariffs will kill jobs and create astronomical inflation. We can't just move manufacturing back, we should, but that will take years and a total reworking of how much we pay for everything.

Trump’s vindictive, petty ‘get even’ impulsive intent with ‘tariff raising’ is probably Wrong. Insist real brains come together & publicly announce a more thoughtful realistic approach.

How about we stop giving tax breaks to the same corporations asking for relief from Tariffs. I do not agree with anything a Corrupt Republican offers, but the tax breaks harm more Americans than Tariffs do. These fuckos want their cake and eat it too.... wake up America. make America great again and vote our anti-American Republicans. Fascists, Propagandists, Unintellectuals.... Who do not follow Jesus’ beliefs and rules.... you can be Republicans, but are you truly Christians???? Not if you follow the Republican/ Conservative way..... shall the light shine on you... and you see the light....

No exceptions to tariffs. We’ve been following the reckless free trade policies for about 40 years now. During that time the global corporations get richer and the middle class shrinks. Time for a new approach.

Impose the tariffs. There are many mom and pop shops and other companies in the US that can be utilized. Just look at Etsy.com. Cut the crutch on China. At some point we need to stop and it won’t be easy. Bottom line the big stores don’t want to pay more for their goods because if their goods are too high smart people will shop elsewhere. Ever go to Toys R Us and try to find a toy from anywhere other than China? Hard to do!

The retailers are right. These tarrifs will jack up prices at these stores where customers shop because they're on a budget. This will do more harm than good!
