The residents at Cathedral Village have a strong connection to nature and care a great deal about their campus and the environment. They sent Masterpiece Living a video to demonstrate how they are Valuing Gray. The Valuing Gray Award recognizes organizations that develop systems for leveraging the value, skills, talents, wisdom and experience of older adults to solve society’s challenges.
Resident Sarah West is the chairperson of the Environmental Stewardship Committee (ESC) and also a Masterpiece Living Champion (volunteering her time toward supporting others in their wellness pursuits.) With Sarah’s help, Cathedral Village organized an April Earth Day event which included the clean-up of the corner of Ridge Pike and Cathedral Road, a tree tour of their campus, and a presentation entitled, “Climate Change and What Citizens Can Do.”
Their maintenance team provided gloves and reflective vests for the clean-up, and team members and residents set to work! Community Life Director and fellow Masterpiece Living Champion team member, Chevy Ching, invited residents from their Health Center to join the community in the tree tour of the campus, and Community Life team members and resident volunteers transported residents around the 40-acre campus.
Residents from the ESC also contacted guest speakers from Penn Environmental and the Sunrise Movement, and organized a presentation in Cathedral Hall on climate change. This was Cathedral Village's first Earth Day event, and it was a huge success!
