Senators Warn About Continued Russian Meddling

by Countable | 3.30.17

The bipartisan heads of the Senate Intelligence Committee are warning that Russia is now trying to interfere in the politics of European countries. The committee chairman, Richard Burr (R-NC), and the panel’s ranking member, Mark Warner (D-VA), say Russia is taking the tactics it used to meddle in the U.S. presidential election and amplifying them.

The Intelligence Committee holds a rare, open hearing on Thursday:

"Disinformation: A Primer in Russian Active Measures and Influence Campaigns."

The aim of the hearing is to "provide a foundational understanding of Russian active measures and information operations campaigns." (Watch live)

"An outside, foreign adversary effectively sought to hijack our most critical democratic process: the election of a president," Senator Warner told reporters. “In that process decided to favor one candidate over another, and I can assure you they didn’t do it because it was in the best interest of the American people.”

Senator Burr said the Intelligence Committee’s investigation is vital ahead of next month’s French presidential election. "What we might assess as a very covert effort in 2016 in the United States, is a very overt effort, as well as covert, in Germany and France, already been tried in Montenegro and the Netherlands," Burr told a packed room of reporters at the Capitol. “So we feel part of our responsibility is to educate the rest of the world about what’s going on, because it’s now in character assassination of candidates.

Burr and Warner say they have asked 20 people to testify in their Russia investigation, including President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and top advisor Jared Kushner and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort. The senators report they have seven staffers examining thousands of pages of raw intelligence, because they say the scope and breadth of their investigation is unprecedented.

On the other side of the Capitol, the House of Representatives investigation into Russian interference in the election remains stalled. Democrats on the committee continue to call on Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) to recuse himself from the probe for allegedly working with the White House, instead of committee members.

There should be no vote on Supreme Court justices until the extent of Russian involvement is determined.

Special Prosecutor please. Until Russian interference is quantified and until a full disclosure of the Trump family's business interests are (in violation of the emoluments clause) we cannot trust that the Trump administration's actions have not been directed or unduly influenced by foreign (or corporate) entities. Until that time no administration policies should be enacted. We need a government working for the interests of the American people not foreign despots. The public statements and policy actions of this administration does not make its true allegiances apparent. In fact I don't think they work in my interests or the interests of the vast majority of the American people.

Having watched this mornings hearings I will summarize the observation as a laying of the foundation and big picture of Russia's meddling. HOWEVER, none of the mornings discussion in any way excuses Trumps intentions nor people associated with Trump. Trump is the United States biggest immediate threat. He needs to be Impeached! Today's hearings don't address the President's lack of credibility which he himself erodes by voicing lack of trust in the intelligence community and media...he has been a promoter of fake news by choosing to repeat things he has heard or read rather than researching! The President lacks the necessary Temperament and Character that should be upheld by the office. Violations of the Emoluments clause, Nepotism, Lies, admiration for Putin, Russian investments, Money Laundering, Trump Business ties to Russian Mafia!!!! The is a huge amount of distrust in the current Administration and while we need to be mindful and intentional about the Big Picture...we need to address the possible immediate threat which is Trump. The fact that the GOP has on 4 occasions voted AGAINST pulling his taxes is a HUGE sound bite!!! Get his taxes! The committee today stressed following the money. FOLLOW THE MONEY GET HIS TAXES AND QUIT PUTTING THIS OFF! In the morning meeting session Godson talked about the future threat of Russia including other threats of Virtual Reality and other technology, Watts mentioned the Internet and social engineering to expand the influence we've already seen from the Russians using the Internet and being predatory! Congressman Burr concluded the morning session saying that the next frontier would include the ability to impersonate THE GOVERNMENT JUST APPROVED A BILL FOR ISP TO SELL PERSONAL INFORMATION!!! YOU are setting the consumer up to be a victim by this ruling for the sake of competition!!! WE HAVE A RIGHT TO PRIVACY!! DO YOU THINK WE ARE NOT PAYING ATTENTION?

You senators, Republicans and Democrats have a responsibility to the American people about this. Put you political party aside and investigate this immediately. If the current POTUS and his team are involved bring up charges of treason. That is your job, that's what you are elected to do. The people are watching and YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THIS! Additionally get rid of Devin Nunes he's a traitor.

Please push to remove Nunes from the Russia investigation and the establishment of a special committee to move the process forward in an urgent and honest manner.

Even the preliminary evidence makes it obvious that Russia is conducting a bloodless world invasion via cybercrime. Only the staunch few sheltered in the bubble of the right wing noise machine, hearing only what they want to hear, are in denial. This is too important for partisan politics. It doesn't matter if it changes the outcome of the election or not. What Russia is doing could be an act of war. We need to know the full extent of Russian meddling and we need to know it now.

We, your constituents, are seeing a disturbing trend in the Republican controlled Congress. Seemingly eager to take command and push through as much legislation as possible to undo a hated president's policies, Republican reps and senators are ignoring the Russian mafia thug in the White House. I think the Repub majority simple doesn't know what to make of him and his family, so they are overlooking - literally - the elephant in the room. As a result, the nation is being shaken to its core. The myriad problems are being sidestepped & shrugged at. The longer the indecision continues, the less credible these lawmakers become. Please stop and think- what are the ramifications of this president's corruption on YOUR family, YOUR neighbors, and voters who TRUST YOU. You missed the chance to isolate the family and prevent the problem. Now, it's going to hurt. Make the right decisions! Protect your country from the grassroots up. Legislation can come later. Thanks for reading.

Please encourage continuing investigation into Russian influence during election and now. Do not be distracted by shiny things and smoke bombs put in the way by the Trump administration and their big business friends. Our country is unsafe and our future compromised while the Russian influence persists. Thank you.

This should be a bipartisan issue. It that affects all of us. I urge you to support an independent investigation as the conflicts of interest for congressional investigation are obvious.

Not only do we need a thorough investigation complete with a special prosecutor and commission in this country, but also to stand by our allies

What can I say? This must be an independent investigation for the American people to accept its findings and implications. If Russia influenced our elections and helped choose this administration, they are illegitimate. If Russia continues to influence the T administration, it constitutes treason. If Russia did not, we must get on with governing. No more T appointees until we know the truth. Logical and to the point.

This is deeply concerning. No country should feel comfortable interfering with our democratic processes, dividing our people, or destabilizing our democracy.

We need an independent prosecutor with subpoena powers to lead this investigation. Nunes needs to r cause himself. He is not investigating the Russian connection with the Trump campaign and / or administration. He is more concerned with who leaked information than where the information may lead. That would have been like the emphasis being on identifying "deep throat" instead of actually investigating Watergate. And please, please make sure that Sally Yates is called to testify. The American people need to know the extent of Russian intervene in our election, the amount of collusion. We need to know Tump's financial entanglements with Russian. We need his taxes to do a complete investigation.

Enough! Corruption and party over country are endemic in Congress. The Tea Party ushered in a dangerous approach and a religious and fiscal agenda that are destroying our country. Add the corruption and ignorance of this president and his cronies, and it will take decades to recover if we can. Rebuilding our government will take a generation since they are intent on purging all corporate knowledge. We must find moderate republicans willing to fight this destruction. Work together to save our country, our environment, our children. Help us get some balance back.

It is terrifying how long it is taking for action to be taken. If my bank card were stolen, it would be frozen in 5 minutes after a phone conversation. Yet this stolen administration moves on, appointing more dishonest people that share their agenda, passing more harmful laws, and severing ties with long term allies.
