Over the weekend, President Donald Trump took direct aim at special counsel Robert Mueller, tweeting:
Why does the Mueller team have 13 hardened Democrats, some big Crooked Hillary supporters, and Zero Republicans? Another Dem recently added...does anyone think this is fair? And yet, there is NO COLLUSION!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 18, 2018
The president continued his twitter attack on Monday morning, writing:
A total WITCH HUNT with massive conflicts of interest!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 19, 2018
Is it now time for Congress to pass one of its Mueller protection bills?
In August, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) introduced this bill – co-sponsored by Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) – that would ensure any action the DOJ might take to fire a special counsel must first be reviewed by a panel of federal judges.
"Checks and balances have served the country well for the past two hundred years. Our legislation would allow judicial review of the firing of any special counsel that was impaneled to look at the President or their team – regardless of party. I think this is a good check and balance, both for today and in the future."
This bill would specify that a special counsel can only be disciplined or removed by an Attorney General who has been confirmed by the Senate, or the most senior Senate-confirmed Dept. of Justice (DOJ) official who isn’t recused from the matter.
When sponsoring Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) introduced this bill in December, he said:
"The president never declared he wasn’t going to fire Comey, but he fired Comey… When somebody comes at him like Mr. Comey did and like Mr. Mueller has, there’s a goodly chance he will fire him. But the issue is what standards should there be to determine whether he should be fired. The president is not the king… The president doesn’t have unlimited powers… It’s not the issue of whether or not you believe Trump’s not going to fire him; it’s what the law should be if he changes his mind, and for the next president and the next president."
This is the Senate’s version of the House bill.
Sponsoring Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) introduced this bill to allow a judicial review if a special counsel is removed.
"It is critical that special counsels have the independence and resources they need to lead investigations. A back-end judicial review process to prevent unmerited removals of special counsels not only helps to ensure the investigatory independence, but also reaffirms our nation’s system of checks and balances," Tillis said.
Does Congress need to act on a bill to protect Mueller from being fired? Or, as some Republican members of Congress have said, is the legislation unnecessary? Let Congress know your thoughts by hitting Take Action. Then share your thoughts below.

Yes, it would be a Constitutional Crisis. Robert Mueller is a Republican and it’s important that people remember that when 45 says it’s the work of Democrats.
This should have been done weeks ago. Remember when Muller first got the job he was praised up and down by both sides for being fair and non partisan.
YES! IMMEDIATELY PROTECT MUELLER FROM BEING FIRED WITHOUT CAUSE BY ANYONE !
I am your constituent and I’m writing to ask that you protect Robert Mueller and his investigation into Russian meddling. Your silence is deafening we the people want answers to this very serious issue, if they can hack into our election they can hack into our entire system including our nuclear power our Financial Institutions etc. please act.
Protection for Mueller is absolutely vital at this time. The man is doing his job and MUST be allowed to continue his investigation unhindered. Besides, if those in the path of investigation have nothing to hide then they have nothing to fear.
Protect Mueller! He is A Republican not a Democrat who is doing the job given to him. He must be allowed to continue to do his job without fear of dismissal.
Republicans need to decide if they fear a few tweets from the president more than the risk of civil war. The People will not stand for trumps threatened authoritarian power grab - congress cannot allow it to happen.
Checks and balances!!!!!
Take immediate action to protect Mueller and his investigations. Without them, our country is headed for a dictatorship and complete collapse of democracy.
Passing legislation to protect the special counsel should have been done long ago. The only ones who should be concerned or worried of what an investigation would find is those that have done wrong. Those who are innocent have nothing to worry about and repetitive calls to end such investigations and calling them a “witch hunt” come off as unprofessional, paranoid, and guilty of wrongdoing. The very fabric of our nation is that the system of law applies to all and no one is above it. To abandon that is to abandon this nation, its founding principles, law and order, judicial process, common sense, and to abandon support from your voting constituents.

I’m an Independent voter who traditionally voted Republican. Please support efforts to allow the Mueller investigation to be completed.
Senators Lee and Hatch, and Representative Curtis, I believe very strongly in the importance of checks and balances within our government as set in place by the Constitution. I have faith in all of your desires to maintain that Constitution. Under our current and previous Administration, the Executive branch has exploded in power. Though I doubt that allegations of direct Trump-Russia collusion will lead anywhere, it is critical for the function of our democracy that a sitting president cannot be immune to the rule of law. In the past, this role would have been played by the workings of democracy, as the people would have overwhelmingly voted to remove a president who fired somebody investigating him, but in our current climate, I doubt that would happen. Please uphold our Constitution by voting to protect special counsels.
No. This is all political grandstanding. I’m not a fan of special councils. They have historically taken too long and stray from their original mandate. Sadly the current version has given special councils a bad name. Mueller has picked a team that is doing more harm than good. I would rather see special councils done away with. Congress and our Inspector General Systems work well. If an IG finds criminality they turn it over to law enforcement. As a former IG I trust their impartiality more.
Yes YES Y E S Y E S Y E S
Yes, President Trump needs protection from a run-away investigation headed by Robert Mueller.
Muller and his investigation absolutely need to be protected! The behaviors of everyone associated with this administration are questionable considering if you have nothing to hide, why so defensive? Let the investigation run it’s course. Mueller has proven himself to be an upstanding character who loves his country. He is a Republican. So why are so many opposed to letting the investigation run it’s course? Country over party!!!!!
Yes, it is urgent that the Muller investigation is protected . Muller can't be fired!
Protect the Independent Investigation led by Robert Mueller!! Do NOT allow him to be removed or shut down. We, the American People, need to know the truth, and need to know about ALL that Mueller finds. The fact that trump is tweeting so frantically is evidence that he has plenty to hide. Anyone who helps trump lie and cheat is also guilty. This chapter may bring about the demise of the Republican Party, and with as much as they have helped this crooked trump administration, it can’t happen soon enough. What side of history do you want to be counted on? We will see your voting record. Protect Mueller & the Investigation!
Yes. A specially appointed counsel or investigator should have the power to investigate until they say they have completed the job. No president ever should have the power stop the investigation into whether he (or she) broke the laws. What would have happened if Clinton had tried to stop the investigation into whether he had a sexual relationship with Lewinsky?
