What’s the story?
Special counsel Robert Mueller has issued a subpoena to the Trump Organization requesting business documents, including some related to Russia.
The New York Times, which broke the story, explained that "word of the subpoena came as Mr. Mueller appears to be broadening his inquiry to examine the role foreign money may have played in funding Mr. Trump’s political activities."
What is the Trump Organization, and Trump, saying?
Alan Futerfas, an attorney for the Trump Organization, told the Associated Press it has been "fully cooperative" with the investigation since July 2017. "This is old news and our assistance and cooperation with the various investigations remains the same today," Futerfas said.
Asked about the subpoena, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters:
"As we've maintained all along, and as the president has said numerous times, there was no collusion between the campaign and Russia. For specific questions regarding the Trump Organization, I would refer you to them."
- In July, Trump was asked in a Times interview whether Mueller looking into his finances would be a "red line" violation. "I would say yeah, I would say yes,” the president said. “By the way, I would say, I don't – I don't – I mean, it's possible there's a condo or something, so, you know, I sell a lot of condo units, and somebody from Russia buys a condo, who knows? I don't make money from Russia."
What do you think?
