Poll: 70% of Americans Support an Assault Weapons Ban – Do You?
Do you support or oppose an assault weapons ban?
What’s the story?
- 70% of all voters would support banning assault weapons, according to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll.
- The poll was conducted Aug. 5-7, in the immediate aftermath of two mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio.
What are the numbers?
- 86% of Democrats would back such a ban.
- 55% of GOP voters would support banning assault weapons, and 54% said they’d support stricter gun laws more generally. (Politico notes that this finding contradicts President Donald Trump’s claims that there’s “no political appetite” for such restrictions.)
- 90% of Republican voters said they would back universal background checks for weapons purchases.
- 23% of potential voters opposed an assault weapons ban.
- 89% of voters want to block gun sales to people who have been reported as dangerous to law enforcement by mental health providers.
- 84% support banning people convicted of violent misdemeanors from purchasing guns.

The mayor of Highland Park, IL stated on a July 6, 2022 the obvious: every country in the world has people in their communities with severe psychological problems but the United States is the only country that has consistent mass shootings, almost all of them involving high-powered assault weapons.
The first and obvious step to reducing casualties from mass shootings is to ban assault weapons with the exception of use by on-duty law-enforcement and the military.
For the sake of this country and the lives of children and adults, please pass a law banning assault weapons in our state and federally.
The second step to reducing and eventually eliminating mass shootings in this country is to regulate gun purchases and ownership in a similar manner to how we regulate the employment of physicians in each state. Physicians are required to have extensive training and continuing education. The same should be required for gun purchases and ownership. In addition to this, psychological screening should be mandatory for gun purchases in every instance and and regular screening annually should be a no-brainer.
These are very practical solutions to this very large problem. The solutions are neither republican or democrat; they are simply pragmatic. Please help make
