House Intelligence Report: What Happens Now?
Join us and tell your reps how you feel!
What’s the story?
The GOP members of the House Intelligence Committee announced Monday that they had concluded their investigation into the 2016 presidential election and there was no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. They said they would issue a 150-page report documenting their conclusions. But where is it?
It turns out there are some steps that must be followed before the report can be released:
The committee is now discussing changes to the draft report. They have set a March 22 deadline to finish that process.
A meeting is scheduled March 22 to formally adopt a final draft of the report. Democrats on the panel are not expected to vote to endorse the report, which was authored entirely by Republican members of the panel and their staffs.
The final report will then be sent to the intelligence community to review and redact classified information as appropriate. There is no specified time frame for that process.
Once redactions have been completed, the report can be released publicly.
Meanwhile, Democrats on the panel, lead by Ranking Democrat Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), announced Tuesday the release of a 21-page "status report" of their efforts to compile lists of witnesses and leads they allege were ignored.
They hope to reopen the investigation if Democrats win back the House in November.
What do you think?
Do you think the House Intelligence Committee is right, there was no collusion? Are you curious to read the report? Do you support the Democratic position, that the investigation was ended prematurely? Should they reopen the investigation, or should they just defer to the special counsel?
