What’s the story?
President Donald Trump’s plan to address school shootings does not include his previous calls to raise the age for buying semi-automatic weapons to 21.
In a series of tweets on Monday, the president summarized his administration’s proposals on school safety and gun restrictions:
"Very strong improvement and strengthening of background checks will be fully backed by White House."
"Bump Stocks will soon be out."
"Highly trained expert teachers will be allowed to conceal carry, subject to State Law."
"On 18 to 21 Age Limits, watching court cases and rulings before acting. States are making this decision. Things are moving rapidly on this, but not much political support (to put it mildly)."
What did the president mean by "Bump Stocks will soon be out"?
On Saturday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement:
"The Department of Justice has submitted to the Office of Management and Budget a notice of a proposed regulation to clarify that the National Firearms and Gun Control Act defines 'machinegun' to include bump stock type devices."
DeVos to lead commission
On Sunday, the White House announced that U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos will lead a commission tasked with exploring ways to protect schools from gun violence.
DeVos said: "We’ve had to talk about this topic way too much over the years. And there’s been a lot of talk in the past but very little action."
