Trump Drops Call to Raise Guns Age Limit, Supports Arming Teachers

by Countable | Updated on 3.12.18

What’s the story?

President Donald Trump’s plan to address school shootings does not include his previous calls to raise the age for buying semi-automatic weapons to 21.

In a series of tweets on Monday, the president summarized his administration’s proposals on school safety and gun restrictions:

  • "Very strong improvement and strengthening of background checks will be fully backed by White House."

  • "Bump Stocks will soon be out."

  • "Highly trained expert teachers will be allowed to conceal carry, subject to State Law."

  • "On 18 to 21 Age Limits, watching court cases and rulings before acting. States are making this decision. Things are moving rapidly on this, but not much political support (to put it mildly)."

What did the president mean by "Bump Stocks will soon be out"?

On Saturday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement:

"The Department of Justice has submitted to the Office of Management and Budget a notice of a proposed regulation to clarify that the National Firearms and Gun Control Act defines 'machinegun' to include bump stock type devices."

DeVos to lead commission

On Sunday, the White House announced that U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos will lead a commission tasked with exploring ways to protect schools from gun violence.

DeVos said: "We’ve had to talk about this topic way too much over the years. And there’s been a lot of talk in the past but very little action."

I absolutely do not support #45’s lack of action. #45 has totally reneged on what he told the loved ones of Sandy Hook, Las Vegas and Parkland shootings. The answer to gun control is NOT bringing in more guns into the classroom. 1. Tighten up background checks. 2. Reverse the Executive Order signed by #45 last year, allowing the mentally ill to buy guns. 3. Raise all gun purchases to the age of 21. The legislative branch should be enacting the law of no bump stops for weapons; not the judicial branch. #45’s lack of comprehension of the US Constitution continues to be proof of his lack of qualification as President. In the end, #45’s lacking is what will continue to cause division in our country and continue the out-of-control spiral we’re on.

If you have the right to fight and die for your country, the right to participate in our electoral process, the right to buy your own house, you are old enough to be protected by the 2nd Amendment. And about arming teachers, if you train them properly (like Trump is proposing) then it will be a deterrent to cowardly school shooters.

Another flip flop. Same old pattern. Looks like Mr Trump is the one who is scared of the NRA. My money is on the kids in Parkland. I would have to say they seem to have a lot more sense than I’ve seen coming out of the White House.

To my fellow John who commented earlier on this page. Everywhere 45 goes IS an armed zone. There are multiple men with guns around him 24/7 and it seems to be working pretty well. Also the part about giving all colored people AR-15s. That seems to be pretty racist in that you are assuming that people of color kill people and shouldn’t be trusted. Should they not have the right to buy the same guns as everyone else?

glad 45 listened to the people. NRA represented members well. 18-21 gun ban is unconstitutional and extremely stupid.

Hold this president accountable for what he says. There should be an age limit and that limit should be 21. Period.

Any infringement on our 2nd amendment right should be considered constitutional treason and severe punishments for anyone found guilty on trampling over our rights.

I support the restriction of not being able to purchase an automatic weapon like the one used in the Florida school shooting. Yes 18 is old enough to serve our country, and yes you should have to be 21 or older to purchase alcohol. I served in the USAF when I was just 18 and at that time you only had to be 18 years old to purchase and consume beer and wine on base only. Carrying a weapon was not part of my job, so I only got to handle one for training purposes and qualification. Obviously if you are serving our country you are going to have to handle weapons sooner or later, but that doesn’t mean that you are old enough to own your own automatic guns. I know of several instantes when an Airman was compromised by their mishandling of their assigned weapons.

An age requirement for the purchase of any or all firearms is unconstitutional! If someone is 18 then they are an adult and must be able to enjoy all Constitutional rights! I’m for lowering the drinking age for civilian young people to 19. When I was 18 it was 18! 40 and 50 year old people get plenty stupid! So I really don’t want to hear it!

Is anyone really surprised, he lies all the time. He'd sell his soul for fame, money. He's a useless president, has no leadership ability, lacks diplomacy and most of all he's the biggest liar ever to hold office. He's not going to buck the NRA, he's counting on their large campaign contributions.

Good. Why should a Constitutional right be denied till 21, when every other right has no age limit (except voting)?

You should be able to buy a shotgun at 18, and rifles and handguns at 21. Before you are able to drink and have a gun you need to learn gun safety and responsibility. It’s like how parents slowly give you new responsibilities instead of giving it to you all at once.

Let me start with, I'm a gun loving 2A supporting American. But, what more proof do we need that trumps a GD moron thinking arming teachers is a sensible response & sane leadership. It's not, even if trainings involved...Will target offs become part of parent teacher conferences? "Feel secure in the knowledge your little Timmy has a teacher who's packin! Here at Winchester Elementary, all the teachers are armed & dangerous!" And this makes sense to you? And what if 7-10yrs down the road it's a pissed off little Timmy come to shoot up the school? You think that armed teacher will have no hesitation, no reservation, putting s bullet into a kid they've taught, watched grow up? And you know aside from the teachers hesitation, there's no way a pistol is gonna beat a semi automatic, unless there's an element of surprise. Unless, unless, unless. How many variables? It's DUMB. It's backwards & it's only to protect the pockets of gun manufacturers. America, gun makers are more important to the POTUS than your children. It's time for common sense. It's time to stop the name calling & finger pointing that if you're for gun safety & reform you're somehow anti America, anti constitution & for a gaffling up of everyone's guns. STOP IT. That's not what reform is. When a kids dead they're dead. Gun reform, you'll still have guns.

Those who still don’t want adults carrying on school campuses obviously want more school shootings. There needs to be someone there to protect the school. They can’t beat a gun with nothing but their bare hands. Raising age limits banning gun accessories banning certain guns will not stop shootings. Someone with a gun can stop a shooter.

If 45 loves guns so much, make everywhere and anywhere 45 is an armed zone. All guns, open carry or concealed, should be allowed. Make him live with the threat just like every other citizen. Every school kid and teacher. Make that law for all NRA goons also. And arm all abused women and children. Require every person of color be armed with an AR-15. See how far that gets. Enough with the hypocrisy and ignorance.

When Donald Trump and all the other hypocrites backed by the NRA allow "highly trained expert teaches" to carry concealed weapons into their campaign rallies and speeches, then we should consider allowing them into our children's classrooms! More guns will never make schools safer. Ban assault weapons, enact universal background checks and get help for those bullied and marginalized students.

I would expect no less from 45 who tells the people one thing and then does the opposite when big donors want something else. The NRA claim 4 million members. That’s is less than 2% of the US population. 80% of the people want better, reasonably gun laws like raising the age limit for semi-automatic weapons to the same age as hand guns.
