Final Chance to Comment on Arctic and Offshore Drilling

by Countable | Updated on 3.7.18

What’s the story?

  • The public has until March 9 to comment on the Trump administration’s expanded offshore drilling proposal.

  • The plan would allow offshore oil and gas drilling in nearly all U.S. waters. It would also increase drilling sites in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska, and reinstate leasing sites in the Pacific Ocean.

  • Comments can be submitted here.

Why expand drilling?

  • "We’re embarking on a new path for energy dominance in America, particularly on offshore," Ryan Zinke, the interior secretary, said when he unveiled the plan in January. He continued:

"This is a clear difference between energy weakness and energy dominance. We are going to become the strongest energy superpower."

  • Thomas J. Pyle, president of the American Energy Alliance, said: "These are our lands. They’re taxpayer-owned and they should be made available."

Democrats are asking for a longer comment period

  • The top-ranking Democrat on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Sen. Maria Cantwell of Washington, led the coalition of 22 Democrats in a letter to Zinke.

  • "The opportunity for the public to provide input on the Draft Proposed Program is critical given the new, large scope of the Draft Proposed Program and its potential impacts on coastal communities and economies, the marine environment, and climate," they wrote, adding:

"We do not believe that the 23 currently announced ‘open house’ style meeting are adequate in duration, location, nor format needed to meet the public input requirements."

What do you think?

Do you support the proposal? Does it help America embark on a "new path for energy dominance"? Or does it pose, as environmentalists have said, a “grave threat”? Hit Take Action and tell your reps, then share your thoughts below.

And be sure to submit your comments here.

NO OFFSHORE DRILLING. Marine and coastal waters are already suffering and there have been toxic spills in the last few years due to busted offshore drilling rigs. More money needs to be put into sustainable energy resources, not drilling finite resources so we can “become an energy superpower.” We won’t be a superpower at all if we don’t invest in sustainable alternatives.

Please NO!!! Is there anything that can be kept sacred and not sold off for the almighty dollar? The money just goes in the pockets of the rich at everyone and everything else’s expense. Beyond sad!

NO. Stop the destruction of our protected US waters ... The plan would allow offshore oil and gas drilling in nearly “ALL” U.S. waters. **THE P IN EPA IS “PROTECTION”.** STOP this now! NO more drilling! Congress do your JOB. Say hell no to Zinke/Pruitt/Trump. (and BTW...this drilling would NOT happen in the ocean near MarALago...bad for billionaire business).

DO NOT ALLOW THIS. The environmental impact alone would be an irreversible waste. To think it could not, would not, affect human life is ignorant. I implore our representatives to question the professionals on this: scientists, wildlife/animal experts and the like. Please do not place your decision on the bottom line of big oil corporations and the rich that stand to make even more money on the lives of thousands, potentially millions of living creatures that we should be taking care of; not destroying because they stand in the way of a gas pump!

No on this proposal. Renewables- nuclear energy, geothermal, solar, wind. Get off the fossil fuel habit.

With Family living in Alaska—and even Native Alaskans—my understanding is that overwhelmingly they want this. Respect their choice. If you are pro-choice, respect theirs and vote yes!

I do not support Arctic and off shore drilling. This is a grave threat to our security and our environment. Our environment supports human and other life to exist on this planet. We need to be focusing on renewable energy.

No! No more spills, no more killing the ocean in the same way we kill the earth and the air. It’s as if the majority of the Republican Party were rushing to destroy all life everywhere. Do not poison our oceans.

Do any of you progressives understand that petroleum isn’t just used to heat our homes, but it is used to manufacture plastics and so many products that we use on a daily basis, they all couldn’t be listed here? Solar or wind power will not give us those products. Yet, you Tesla driving elitists are all part of a child slave labor force to mine cobalt for your electric car batteries! Get real, and get over your self-righteous attitude. You do not have the moral high ground on this one.

Please no more drilling for oil. In the arctic or offshore. Time and time again the drillers say they will be safe, but there's always a spill. Our planet cannot withstand this degradation any further. Enough is enough. We want green energy solutions from this point onward. Our future and our children's futures depend on it.

We need to transition to green alternatives now! Why are we still approving permits for oil based companies. Invest in green energy systems and power that is controlled by the people not larger corporations.

I am completely opposed to opening the Arctic refuge for oil and gas drilling. I am appalled that this was made part of last years budget bill. The pursuit of short term profit in exchange for long term harm and loss is morally bankrupt.

We must become energy self sufficient whether that’s oil, gas, wind, solar. Being able to produce whatever we need is what’s enabled us to win in WW2 and we can’t be strangled by the Middle East in our energy needs.

The US should not open up arctic or additional offshore drilling. The current natural gas and oil shale boom has put the US in a position where fossil fuels are readily available and currently at an economical rate. The US should at this time put more energy and effort into developing renewable energy sources. The US is the only country on earth that is not a part of the Paris Climate Agreement. As such, global efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels will increase. The US should act as a leader in this regard, rather than take a step backwards. Please oppose any arctic and offshore fossil fuel activities to include drilling and exploration. Thank you.
