This Week in Congress: The $19B Disaster Aid Bill and (Maybe) Granting ‘Dreamers’ & TPS Recipients Legal Status
How do you feel about this week's congressional agenda?
Congress returns from its Memorial Day recess for a shortened week that will see a long-awaited, $19.1 billion disaster relief passage sent to President Donald Trump’s desk for a signature.
The House will bring up the disater aid package on Monday under the fast-track suspension of the rules process, which requires a two-thirds majority for passage, along with legislation to extend the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program beyond June and two other bills. The rest of the week will feature votes on a resolution expressing the House’s solidarity with pro-democracy protesters who were exiled from China after the Tiananmen Square demonstrations in 1989, and a bill to improve preparedness for pandemics. The House may also bring up a bill to provide permanent legal resident status and a path to citizenship to "Dreamers" who were brought to the country illegally as children and recipients of Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
The Senate will also start its week Monday, with procedural votes on a budget proposed by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and the nomination of Andrew Saul to be reappointed as Social Security Commissioner in advance of a potential confirmation vote. The rest of the week will be focused on nominations, including the chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, a district court judge, and two federal claims court judges.
