The Daily Countable: Guns & Students & Russia -- Oh My!

by Countable | 2.23.18

Hallo! from Countable's editorial HQ in Washington, DC.

Man, this week has been a doozy, dont'cha think? Massive student walk-outs around the country, protesting lax gun regulations. Businesses pulling-out of business deals with the NRA. Some supporters of gun rights softening on their stances toward age limits and mental health restrictions on gun ownership. And that's not to mention the new, jaw-dropping indictments against former Trump colleagues and Russian nationals, detailing schemes of international fraud that sound more like a John le Carré novel than anything really happening in our country. We live in important times. That's why it's so inspiring to experience the thriving, opinionated, engaged & vibrant community on Countable, every day. It's a microcosm of democracy, and we're proud to be with you. OK, end-of-emotional-moment.

One Big Thing: New Charges in Russia Investigation

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has unveiled 32 new tax and bank fraud charges against President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his business partner Rick Gates. Gates has pleaded guilty. Read more about the charges here.

Need a refresher course on Mueller and company? Take a look at our Countable Primer: The Russia Investigation.

On the Radar: Heavy Sanctions on North Korea

President Trump announced on Friday that the U.S. Treasury Department is imposing new sanctions on North Korea targeting its shipping and trading companies. "We have imposed the heaviest sanctions ever imposed," Trump said at the conclusion of his speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference. “Hopefully, something positive can happen. We will see." Click here to read how heavy the sanctions are.

Under the Radar: When is a Burger not a Burger?

The U.S. Cattlemen’s Association filed a 15-page petition with the USDA to prevent products from being labeled as "meat" or "beef" unless they’re made from a slaughtered animal. The ranchers are asking that the U.S. Department of Agriculture differentiate conventional meat from what’s known as “clean meat”—that grown in a lab using animal cells. Should "meat" be reserved for slaughtered animals? Join the conversation here.

djt was incoherent today in his campaign rally speech at CPAC that was disgustingly unAmerican. He spoke on over 30 topics in about an hour of rambling, disconnected from reality nonsense including reading a disgusting poem likening immigrants to evil snakes. Isn’t anyone concerned about this lunatic?

There is so much wrong with this administration, I am not sure where to begin. First take a look at integrity of the GOP primary candidates using Arizona as an example. The GOP chooses corrupt candidates time and time again because those are the types of people they can control and count on to carry out equally corrupt policies, while ignoring the consequences to the less fortunate among us. Soon I fear, those "less fortunate" will include the majority and be compromised primarily those whose voice can be easily silenced, children and the elderly. We need our own Common Sense Movement!

The newest from the Washington Post...one of the Russians indicted by Robert Mueller, connected to the Kremlin, was responsible for an attack on our military by his mercenaries and thwarted by our special forces. If this President is connected to Russian interference of our elections, or anything else Russian he must be held accountable for treasonous behavior.

There are sanctions on Russia. We need to put Hillary and Obama in jail for selling our uranium to the Russians and for spying on the American people for political gain.

Donald Trump is a frightening human being. Between his speech at CPAC and those of the Dana and Wayne from the NRA, I am thoroughly frightened that we are on our way to a full blown dictatorship where we will have executions, government style and martial law. I'm beyond upset. Why is our congress so blind and deaf. And I can't imagine what those students who begged for a ban on assault weapons felt when they saw Trump at CPAC delivering his frothing, rabidly supportive rant to the NRA today. How, how, how can congress not do something about this? But, I suppose there were folks who could see Hitler's trajectory but no one who could have stopped it listened. Please. Please take this incendiary person out of the leadership of this country before it's too late.

I think the title of this piece and the blurb itself are making quite the joke out of what just happened in Florida. Yeah, over a dozen dead children and teachers...it’s a real “doozy”. You can’t separate the walk-outs from the tragedy itself. Please try not to be so tacky next time (and at the rate the US is going with gun violence, there unfortunately will be a next time). Some topics are somber, they should be treated that way.

Age 21 at least before you can own a gun. And no selling those high-performance guns. As far as security goes in the schools I don’t think you should be asking the teacher to take on another job I don’t think they should be asked to be fire control either you know they’re going to grab an extinguisher yes Or you are going to have to triple their wages if you want them to do different types of jobs. Are we all supposed to be talking guns when we go to work or maybe the company I work for had very good security and when things got a little rough they put up pull up through bulletproof plexiglass and enclosed the HR office and gave you a pushbutton that you might talk to them from the outside hallway. Nobody got in and thick they even put the all the questions as far as where you can get a application for employment on a different site off the premises. Many things you can do to change this. As far as Robert Mueller investigation I think he’s doing a very good job very thorough he’s going to finish it up in the right way where he’s going to bring them all in and prove what I’ve done wrong is doing a great job of that I’m very proud of him.

I understand the desire to own a gun. But to think it’s a god given right and that automatic weapons are what the founders of the constitution had in mind is absurd. Eliminate the weapons of mass destruction, get the NRA out of the pockets of the politicians, and try to do what’s right for the safety of the children. We should be able to get this right without much thought. Jail trump and his buddies and might be easier to do.

I fully agree that the (M)ain (S)tream (M)edia (MSM) is the most critical facet of the modern-day problem of mass-media-driven politics. It often seems that, instead of popular opinion determining the focus of the news, it's the opposite: the news media determines the focus of popular opinion. We are only seeing/hearing what the MEDIA whats us to, in order of swaying the uninformed to theirs and as such, the Democratic point of view. Sadly we’ve seen over the past 10+/-years, that the “Main Stream Media (MSM), in support of the Democratic Party has used their “Power of the Press” to sway the “Uninformed Voter” through the use of the media by their skillfully use of their: * Propaganda:,is information that is not objective and is used primarily to influence an audience and further an agenda, often by presenting facts selectively to encourage a particular synthesis or perception, * Misinformation: Stories which are false or incorrect information, that is spread intentionally or unintentionally. * Disinformation: False Facts or Information that is spread deliberately in order to deceive folks from the Truth. * Distraction: Information which distracts, divides the attention, or prevents concentration on the Truth/Facts. I fully agree that when American voters allow the media -- and, by extension, campaigns -- to determine the most important issues of the day, we open ourselves to outlandish spin, political influence and downright fraud. We have been, and are continuing to see that today’s Main Stream Media (MSM) is poisoning their presentation of the news in favor to the Democratic Agenda. #TheSpinWon’tWin. 2*23*18.

Make extreme gun laws! It is the 21st Century not the Wild West!!!! Catch up to the rest of the world. We lead the world in violence instead of intelligence and innovation. America is now an embarrassment and not a world leader. Using force is not leadership. It is dictatorship. Our democracy has been trashed! Step Up!!

What I’d like to know, is What Happened? For years now, it hasn’t been safe for kids to go to school...What the Hell happened...when I was going to school back in the 50’s & 60s the worse thing a boy could bring to school was a small pocket knife, not to harm anybody, but most boys always carried a small pocket knife..,there might have been a fist fight once in awhile, but I don’t remember to many of them...What the Hell happened...

Some of the comments have complained about the mainstream media as being too liberally biased. I can't say that I agree. Because facts have a liberal bias, and unfortunately, the MSM is about ratings. That is one of the reasons for the election to have gone so wrong. It was Trump all day, all night, all the time. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders got a pittance of air-time in comparison. Even on a very liberal cable network, MSNBC, Trump, and his majority white campaign rallies were broadcast in their entirety, and that was just not done for the Democratic candidates. So let us be honest. Trump supporters do not like being a minority or seeing negativity toward their president. And truly, Fox news is not MSM, either.

We all know teachers are going to protect their students by taking a bullet if need be. Give teachers bulletproof vest. The coach might have made it, to the shooter if he would have had a vest on. Teacher are going to step up to protect their student, by trying to stop the shooter or getting their students to safety. Before we ask teachers to strap on a gun. We should be able to come up with was to protect the students. Turn the desk over lay down behind them. Not all in a corner easier to shoot more of them when in a corner. Block the door window with chairs desk. Give them skills to survive a mass shooting. All of their phones should have gotten a silent alert that there was a shooter on campus and where. Yes we want to stop the shooting but until we do that let’s give the students skills to hopefully survive.
