Trump Proposes Arming Teachers, Raising Minimum Age for Gun Purchases

by Countable | 2.22.18

What’s the story?

A day after meeting with students, parents, and teachers affected by the Parkland, Florida, shooting that left 17 dead, President Donald Trump tweeted various gun control proposals.

Arming teachers

On Wednesday, multiple outlets reported that the president supported measures to arm teachers. On Thursday morning, Trump clarified:

Raising age to purchase firearms, comprehensive background checks

Following his tweets about arming teachers, the president continued:

"Comprehensive Background Checks": The president may be referring to the Fix NICS Act, which aims to improve the accuracy of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

"Raise age to 21": Under federal law, licensed firearm dealers cannot sell handguns to people under 21 and cannot sell long guns to people under 18. The 19-year-old Florida shooter legally purchased his AR-15.

"End sale of Bump Stocks!": Bump stocks are a mechanism that allows semi-automatic weapons to mimic the firing speed of automatic weapons. Twelve of the rifles the Las Vegas mass shooter had in his hotel room were modified with a "bump stock."

What do you think?

Do you agree with the president? Is the solution to school shootings arming teachers, raising the minimum age to purchase certain firearms, and improving background checks? Hit Take Action and tell your reps, then share your thoughts below.

Any reasonable person can give numerous reasons as to why teachers should not be armed. But Trump is anything but reasonable and he also received over $30 million from the NRA for his election campaign fund so his sincerity is at best questionable. So I will simply ask that he be silenced in November by getting rid of the Republicans in Congress

This isn’t a video game where those who die will get another chance to play the game again! In that room yesterday, where #45 was to be listening, he asked who thought giving teachers a gun was a good idea?, maybe five hands went up. When #45 asked who did not think it was a good idea?, a majority of the room had hands raised. I believe he was using the same vision that saw his inaugural crowd bigger than Obama’s inaugural crowd. A father of a deceased child from Sandy Hook Elementary said his wife is a teacher. He stated that having her with a gun in the classroom was yet another responsibility she did not need. #45 is also offering bonuses for teachers who carry a gun into the classroom. Isn’t that known as a bribe? Perhaps not for those who receive monies from the NRA. Today, teacher after teacher has posted on social media that it was an extremely bad idea. It’s time #45 and others continue to listen and HEAR what is being said. No automatic weapons for anyone other than our military!

I agree with raising the age, ending the sale of bump stocks, and improving background and mental health checks. However, as a future educator I never want guns in my school. Not carried by me or by my colleagues, no matter what their skill level is with any form of weapon.

Arming teachers is the most ridiculous idea I have ever heard, and that is saying a lot in our current political situation. Research shows that attempting to use guns for self defense is more likely to result in an accident or the criminal ending up with the gun. These gun nuts watch way too much TV and have silly fantasies about firearms that are not supported by actual fact. Teachers are educators with more than enough on their plates. They have neither the skills nor the desire to add security guard to the job description. Quit enabling the murder of our young people and get these weapons out of the hands of the public. Our children are our greatest treasure. They must not be sacrificed to the gun lobby. This must stop,

No, arming teachers is not the answer. There have been mass shootings at outdoor concerts, movie theaters, churches!! We must Ban assault weapons. They do not belong in the hands of everyday Americans. I have heard from people in Europe they are afraid to travel to America. This is a disgrace. My father was a WWII veteran and taught us that America is the greatest Country in Earth. I still believe that it is. But we must stop this bloodshed, killing innocent Americans as they live their everyday lives! Congress please take action now!!!!!

Band AR-15 guns. Arming teachers is too dangerous. A student could grab the gun! No guns at school - period. And no thanks to Tom Reed, the Obama ruling that no one with mental issues can own weapons was over ruled. Believe me, come November and we will remember.

The NRA was formed with the idea of gun safety. It has been transformed into a lobby group for gun manufacturers, this idea is about the bottom line for manufactures and Wall Street. Arming teachers with guns is just another way for them to sell a lot more guns. It seems with this administration it’s always about the money for the corporate donors.

Raising the minimum age is a no brainer. Of course kids shouldn’t buy guns but arming teachers? Seriously? We already have ridiculous expectations of teachers and now you want them to be police too? No. What stops a kid from taking a teacher’s gun and killing? What? It’s time to get serious about who, in this country, is allowed to buy guns and no one needs an automatic weapon period.

WELL, THIS IS A TYPICAL REPUBLICAN STUPID IDEA AND NO DOUBT ABOUT IT !! TEACHERS WITH A HAND GUN SUPPOSEDLY GOING UP AGAINST AN ASSAULT RIFLE THAT IS POSSIBLY TRICKED OUT TO BE FULLY AUTOMATIC !! IF IT WAS'NT SUCH A STUPID IDEA IT WOULD BE A JOKE ! INSTEAD IT IS APPALLINGLY WILLFULLY IGNORANT OF THE DYNAMICS OF WARFARE BETWEEN A HAND GUN AND A FULLY AUTOMATIC RIFLE AND THE LEVEL OF TRAINING THAT THE TEACHERS WOULD HAVE TO HAVE WHICH WOULD BE EVEN MORE THAN POLICE TRAINING !!! 700,000 TEACHERS NATION WIDE BEING TRAINED TO A HIGHER STANDARD THAN POLICE !! WHO IS PAYING FOR THIS ?? ONE OF TRUMPS SHELL COMPANIES ?? I SUPPOSE THE TEACHERS ARE SUPPOSED TO DO THIS TRAINING ON THEIR SPARE TIME LIKE BETWEEN MATH AND ENGLISH TESTS ?? THIS IDEA IS A REAL REPUBLICAN IDEA FOR AN ANSWER ALRIGHT !! A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF DUMB AND DUMBER !!

This President has NO clue and doesn’t understand about the Issue of school safety or firearms responsibility. He is a totally disengaged person held accountable to no one. After talking to the victims of another tragedy he shows he is incapable of understanding and leadership on this issue We should support and vote for the change we need to address this problem for our children’s lives and safety

Everyone has the right to protect themselves, and having open season in a “no gun zone” is open season for any mass shooter. My wife is a teacher and her school had a gun threat today because some kids thought it would be funny to pull that prank. I would feel SO much better to know my wife has that option to protect herself and her students if someone would pick her classroom to hold hostage instead of me sitting at work with terrible anxiety and being sent to the hospital for a panic attack. There should be more police or volunteer service men and women to be at schools but if a school can not afford that, give the teachers the ability to protect themselves! If they, the teachers, don’t want that responsibility, they don’t need to sign themselves up for that. Ridding the world of guns is a utopian dream and ridding the world of the ability of law abiding citizens to protect themselves from non-law abiding citizens is more dangerous than allowing us to use our given rights to the 2nd Amendment. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. If not for a gun, than a car, baseball bat, stone, bow and arrow, improvised explosive device, biological chemical weapon, etc. Wake up Liberal America, Conservative pro-gun activists are not the problem, liberal agendas that create hate and deceit are the problem by giving handouts to every human being, whether they are illegals or able bodied workers who decide not to work.

Yes. Arm those closest to the students. Arm faculty, staff and teachers. If schools wish they may hire additional security. Retired or former veterans who have served in combat would be a great choice. If we’re going to raise the age where young people can purchase a weapon then we should raise the voting age to 21.
