A coalition led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party is already preparing to form the next government, as vote counting began in India's general election Thursday local time, Reuters reports.

Why it matters: It's the world's largest-ever exercise in democracy, with 900 million registered voters casting their ballots. It's seen by many as a referendum on Modi. Half a dozen exit polls show he and his Bharatiya Janata Party winning another 5-year term, AP reports. Final results are due by Thursday evening, according to Reuters.
