Berkeley Declares Itself a Marijuana Sanctuary City
Join us and tell your reps how you feel!
What’s the story?
The city council of Berkeley, CA, passed a resolution declaring the community a sanctuary for recreational marijuana.
The resolution prohibits city agencies and employees from using "any city funds or resources to assist in the enforcement of federal drug laws related to cannabis."
What does it matter?
Earlier this year, Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinded Obama-era guidelines that allowed states to relax restrictions on recreational pot without the threat of federal interference.
"The city of Berkeley does not support cooperation with the Drug Enforcement Administration in its efforts to undermine state and local marijuana laws," the resolution states.
Berkeley’s mayor, Jesse Arreguin, tweeted:
In light of threats by Attorney General Sessions regarding a misguided crackdown on our democratic decision to legalize recreational cannabis, we have become what may be the first city in the country to declare ourselves a sanctuary city for cannabis. #berkmtg

Recreational marijuana use by adults 21 and older became legal in California on January 1.
