Berkeley Declares Itself a Marijuana Sanctuary City

by Countable | 2.17.18

What’s the story?

The city council of Berkeley, CA, passed a resolution declaring the community a sanctuary for recreational marijuana.

The resolution prohibits city agencies and employees from using "any city funds or resources to assist in the enforcement of federal drug laws related to cannabis."

What does it matter?

Earlier this year, Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinded Obama-era guidelines that allowed states to relax restrictions on recreational pot without the threat of federal interference.

"The city of Berkeley does not support cooperation with the Drug Enforcement Administration in its efforts to undermine state and local marijuana laws," the resolution states.

Berkeley’s mayor, Jesse Arreguin, tweeted:

Recreational marijuana use by adults 21 and older became legal in California on January 1.

What do you think?

Do you support marijuana "sanctuary cities"? Or do you agree with Sessions’ move? Should pot be a state or federal issue? Hit Take Action and tell your reps, then share your comments below.

Thank you Berkeley for your bravery and compassion. To my representatives please fight for our nation to have affordable access to cannabis. Cannabis is a life saving holistic treatment for so many diseases and disorders. Please consider doing the right thing and legalize cannabis for all Americans who can benefit from its use. For the sake of us all, our children and our children’s children!

We should not need sanctuary cities, but I'm glad for the compassionate and hard-working people who are helping to create them. Cannabis helps so many who struggle with chronic pain, depression, insomnia, and terminal diseases. It has for decades and should be protected as a safe and affordable option. Aside from medical applications, it helps so many deal with stress, rest better, be more creative, and it is so much less destructive than alcohol. It may be a slow process, but don't worry, old white male republicans, if we can't replace you until you die of old age, we will drag you into the present kicking and screaming.

Good job Berkeley! Every city in the country should do this to stand up to Jeff “Good people don’t smoke marijuana” Sessions and the authoritarian Trump administration.

Marijuana is addictive, destructive, and kills. Don’t tell it’s not a gateway drug; I guess watching terror propaganda online isn’t a gateway to being radicalized either??? #KEEPDrugsIllegal

I support legalization but try to remain open to understand both sides of the argument. However when I see so many conservative views in the comments being backed up by factless misinformation or (an alarming amount of) violent threats it makes that side of the argument very hard to take seriously

You want Marijuana to be legal? Get your congress and senate to change the law. We are a nation of laws, follow them, or migrate to another country that lives by your rules. If California were to pass a law with the minimum wage below the federal minimum wage, would be the same as what Berkeley and the state of California are doing by ignoring federal laws.

Cut Off All Federal Funding Now. Who the HE77 do they think they are? And we send our children there to become Radically Indoctrinated in this Poor example of a school. 😷 It’s just another opportunity stepping up to more addictive drugs by creating a marijuana portal. SAD 2*17*28.

It’s time to legalize marijuana for personal use. Complete decriminalization. It is not a gateway drug anymore than alcohol is, and safer. Also there are many health benefits to be gained without the red tape of going to the doctor for pain etc. Tax it as you would any other tabaco product and use that money for the good of the nation, infrastructure, schools as I may be so bold. People who use it get it anyway, why not make the money from it ourselves.

Regulations of marijuana is ridiculous! It is safer than alcohol so it should be treated the same, plus it has many healing properties. We just need more education to help folks understand the importance of keeping safely out of reach of young children and the value of moderation.
