This Week in Congress: Strengthening Obamacare, Making Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity Protected Classes, and Judicial Nominations
How do you feel about this week's congressional agenda?
The Senate starts its week Monday with a procedural vote on the nomination of Michael Truncale to be a judge for the Eastern District of Texas. If it succeeds, a confirmation vote could occur later in the evening or on Tuesday. After consideration of the Truncale nomination ends, the Senate may take up the nomination of Kenneth Lee to be a judge on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. It will also take up the nomination of a district judge for Eastern Louisiana, and an undersecretary of state.
The House will convene on Tuesday for votes on more than a dozen bills under the fast-track “suspension of the rules” process, which allows for accelerated debate but requires a two-thirds majority for passage. Among the suspension bills to be debated are an extension of the National Flood Insurance Program through September and bills to counteract foreign corruption. Wednesday will feature votes on two tribal policy bills. The rest of the week will be focused on a bil to make sexual orientation and gender identity protected classes under civil rights law and a bill to strengthen outreach programs under Obamacare that would also prohibit so-called “junk insurance” plans.
