President Donald Trump urged lawmakers on Wednesday to reject any DACA proposals that do not embrace the "four pillars" of his immigration platform:
Creating a path to citizenship for DREAMers.
Securing the border.
Eliminating the diversity visa lottery.
Limiting family-based immigration.
The Senate is working on a self-imposed end-of-week deadline to write an immigration bill that could gain bipartisan support.
However, on Wednesday morning, the president said in a statement:
"I am asking all senators, in both parties, to support the Grassley bill and to oppose any legislation that fails to fulfill these four pillars."
Trump was referring to legislation drafted by Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA), which, as the New York Times explained, "would provide a path to citizenship for 1.8 million young immigrants, end the visa lottery program, build a border wall, and end what he calls ‘chain migration.’"
According to the president, most Americans back Grassley’s approach to immigration.
"The overwhelming majority of American voters support a plan that fulfills the Framework’s four pillars, which move us towards the safe, modern, and lawful immigration system our people deserve," Trump said.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) pushed back against the president’s claims.
"The American people know what’s going on," Schumer said on the Senate floor. “They know this president not only created the problem, but seems to be against every solution that might pass because it isn’t 100 percent of what he wants.”
"If, at the end of the week, we are unable to find a bill that can pass – and I sincerely hope that’s not the case due to the good efforts of so many people on both sides of the aisle – the responsibility will fall entirely on the president’s shoulders and those in this body who went along with him."

Real news to #45: Demanding versus asking have two very different definitions! You cannot make demands of OUR representatives. Both you and they work for US!!! We did not promise a fruitless wall; We did not make a ludicrous promise that another country would pay for it. NO WALL!
REAL NEWS FLASH so, DJT, listen up - I DO NOT SUPPORT BUILDING A WALL ON OUR SOUTHERN BORDER (or any other border for that matter); I DO SUPPORT THE VISA LOTTERY PROGRAM (one of the most talented, intelligent IT professionals I had the honor to work with in my 40+ year career emigrated to the US under this program and is now a US citizen); I SUPPORT THE REUNIFICATION OF FAMILIES FOR PEOPLE WHO LEGALLY EMIGRATE TO THIS NATION. Apparently, YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE 'MAJORITY' OF AMERICANS WANT, so please stop speaking for me. The 'majority' you speak of is actually a very small slice of our open, welcoming and humane society. As for an actual solution to the debacle you created in September, I agree we need a bipartisan compromise that won't be ripped apart by a tweet. Compromise means each side gives a bit for the GOOD OF THE MAJORITY. It does not mean you get everything you want and threaten to take your pen and go home if you don't. That is called extortion. This is NOT the shady NYC or Moscow real estate business, it is the GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, one designed TO SERVE ALL - not just you and your sycophants. GROW UP OR GO HOME.
How many BILLIONS and TRILLIONS shall we add to our debt to provide cover for this President and his ‘Mexico will pay for it!’ base. Enough Mr Trump! Sign the bill and move on.
The President’s requests are only reasonable and common sense. Those whose real concern is not with interests of Dreamers, but rather with stuffing the ballot box with non-American votes may well still find fault the President’s proposals. Let’s hope common sense prevails.
I support the wall. I support ending the visa lottery. I support ending chain migration. I support deporting all illegals including DACA.
Go President Trump veto it, keep your promise and build that wall, end chain migration, end lottery, implement e verify, get to the back of the line.
No DACA period. DACA is the work of Ovomit and is a slap in the face to the immigrants that took the time to come to this country the right and legal way. Get rid of DACA and no deals to keep it. Build the wall!!!
Our Toddler-In-Chief wants everything his way, he doesn’t know how to compromise. Let’s keep the Dreamers and send the Trump Crime Family packing. No wall, that’s just another rediculous waste of our tax dollars.
News flash, toddler 45, you have no idea what the American people want! They don’t want a wall, wait, didn’t St Ronnie tear down the Berlin Wall???? Dump Trump!!!
Great Comments on Immigration: "We are all blessed to live in the greatest country on earth and I can't blame anybody who wants to live here. But we are also a country built on the foundation of the rule of law. Those who choose to enter this country illegally, or to overstay their visa, have knowingly chosen to break the law. Meanwhile, millions of people who have become permanent members of our society through the proper legal channels, they have shown their respect for the rule of law and for the American people. If you love this country you must respect its laws or respect those that keep you safe. ICE officers do not do what they do because they hate what's standing in front of them. They do what they do because they love what is behind them."
Keep up the good work Mr. President
The democrats don’t want a wall and this is the only thing that Trump has to work with, if this doesn’t have the wall in it then the dem will NEVAR pass a bill with the wall in it . We are talking about Adults why haven’t They applied for citizenship before Now???????
We cannot let a xenophobic racist hold the immigration status of much-deserving individuals who contribute greatly to our country hostage for his own ignorant and bigoted means.
Do any of you democrats know anything about compromising? I really don’t think you do. Democrats want citizenship for DACA recipients in exchange for nothing. And you say Trump is demanding. No, he’s trying to compromise with the democrats and they want something for nothing. He has even gone so far as to offer 1.8 million DACA recipients a path to citizenship when the original was 700,000. (Really 800,000 but there were apparently a few criminals amongst them). He made campaign promises to his supporters, and unlike past presidents, he found a way to keep those promises. Though he promised no citizenship for DACA recipients, he is trying to compromise. You libs seem to think that 80% of Americans want the ”dreamers” to stay. That’s so not true. (Research is your friend). Us conservatives want the wall and an end to chain migration and the visa lottery as well as the DACA recipients deported then they can get in line like the rest of immigrants have done. Past presidents wanted a wall but never got around to actually building one. They knew we needed an actual wall instead of the useless fence. And there was no outrage. Imagine that. The visa lottery has no business being in place in today’s America. Neither does chain migration. You dems say that the dreamers are here through no fault of their own and the parents are to blame. Yet you want to give their parents a clear path to citizenship. You can’t have it both ways. Their parents should not be rewarded for breaking American law. Trump is smart enough to know that if he doesn’t get the funding for the wall and immigration reform then he never will. So veto away, Trump. It takes 2/3 votes for congress to override. Don’t think they will get that many.
Pass a clean bi partisan DACA bill. Bill dream act. Let him veto. Make him veto something that 80% of citizens want. We cannot give in to this tyrant. Do not feed the despot. Stick to getting a good bi partisan clean Dream act. No wall.
45 created this problem. Let’s get some adults to solve it. That does not mean Ryan or McConnell.
He doesn’t want the Dreamers here, never did, and will find any way he can to block legislation that won’t deport them to countries they do not know. He is racist and wants to see the United States as a white only nation. A veto-proof bill is needed.
The Senate is not interested in securing the border and therefore by association not interested in the safety and security of the American Citizen! In November 2018 more conservatives will be elected. Perhaps that will wake up the ones that are already there.
When will the rest of the GOP have the courage to stand against the ridiculous notion of wall stretching across our entire southern border? In Will Hurd words “the most expensive and least effective” way to secure our border.
We must find a path to citizenship for Dreamers. This should not entail spending billions on a worthless wall. We can have security with what we have now and perhaps add more electronic and drone monitoring. In addition, we need to not limit relatives, grandparents in particular, from migrating to the US to be with family. Thank you for your support.
