Trump wants Interior Dept. to have Power to Approve National Park Pipelines

by Countable | 2.13.18

What’s the story?

President Donald Trump’s infrastructure plan would give Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke the power to greenlight pipelines through national parks.

Currently, constructing oil or gas pipelines on National Park Service (NPS) land requires an act of Congress.

Why does it matter?

The infrastructure plan stated:

"Obtaining congressional approval for each pipeline crossing and facilities necessary for the production of energy is time consuming and delays construction."

Allowing the secretary of the interior to unilaterally approve pipelines on land administered by the NPS "would reduce the delays and uncertainties caused by requiring congressional approval," the White House wrote.

Environmentalists and Democratic lawmakers criticized the proposed change.

"At its core the proposal plans to steamroll as many projects to get to yes as fast as possible whether or not there is a robust environmental review," said Brett Hartl, government affairs director of the Center for Biological Diversity.

There should be no pipelines built in our national parks! These parks were created to preserve the beautiful land for all to enjoy and to save it from corrupt people like Trump from capitalizing on it and destroying it. DO NOT DESTROY OUR NATIONAL PARKS!

It appears that Republicans are seeking to dismantle every check and balance that was designed into the Constitution. They continually seek ways to remove items from Congress to or other appropriate agencies to allow a single person or entity to approve and rubber stamp something. This does not protect the citizens or serve the citizens, therefore it is unethical.

Dear Representative, Our public lands need as much protection as they can get. President Trump wants to give DOI the power to approve pipelines through national parks. This would not be protecting our lands, but allowing them to be degraded by private and/or corporate interests. Once done, it will be extremely hard to step back from this decision. Please do what you can to protect our public lands and do not support allowing pipelines through our parks! Thank you for your support in this issue!

No. We don’t need pipelines through national parks. The Keystone pipeline has already had massive oil spills through farmland. We need to pay attention to our environment. Scott Pruitt and the president are dangerous!

No no no, what happened to free market? These people should be able to develop real estate deals with property owners not manipulate the government to access the people’s property.

The approval of any kind of pipeline through public lands -- lands belonging to me and every one of us -- should ABSOLUTELY rest with Congress and NOT the Interior Department. Further, NEVER should there be any short-cutting, stream-lining, or other kinds of lessening of environmental reviews for any such endeavors. Government may NOT abandon MY lands for the sake of Big Business in this way. Unless checked, this administration's rape of America, now enjoyed by individuals chosen by Donald Trump to do just that, is beyond evil. What, pray tell, will be left of the stunning beauty of this country for our children and grandchildren if this continues? If Trump and the GOP have their way, it seems it will be little or nothing.

Ryan Zinke has done enough damage to our national parks, public lands and waterways. This country does not need any more pipelines - especially running through national parks. HE IS THE STEWARD OF OUR NATIONAL LANDS, ENTRUSTED TO PROTECT THEM, NOT SELL THEM OFF TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER. HE DOES NOT OWN OUR NATIONAL PARKS. WE THE PEOPLE OWN THEM. The only group that should be able to approve any decimation to these lands should be the members of Congress, elected BY THE PEOPLE, not some political flunky appointed by an out of control president. Next, they will be replacing the quaint, historic lodges found in most parks with loud, overpriced Trump hotels - at a profit for DJT, of course. Congress should NEVER abdicate this responsibility as they have most others this year. DJT and his Senate-confirmed cabinet have done enough to destroy our nation. THEY NEED TO BE STOPPED.

Congress needs to keep control over gas/oil pipelines in national parks. To give this administration, that have proved over and over that gas and oil interests come before our environment and before individual state interests would only lead to disaster. Next they would interpret that to mean it was ok for all coastal waters. We cannot give this administration any more power to destroy our environment

He’s trying oh so hard to create Trumpsville, or rather Trumpamerica. Pollution everywhere, drilling and pipelines all over, using our national parks and forests to create even more wealth for himself and his friends. Let’s start by drilling and piping every trump golf course.
