The President's Budget: Why Does It Matter?

by Countable | 2.13.18

What’s the story?

The news media is full of stories about different aspects of the president’s budget for FY2019, which was released Monday. All of those stories are important. The devil is in the details, as they say. But it’s also true that much of the president’s budget will never see the light of day in terms of actual policy. So, what does it actually mean? Why does it actually matter?

President Trump’s budget matters because it is a philosophical document. It presents a picture of what the administration believes about the role of government, the state of the economy, and the future of the country. It reveals the underlying priorities that guide their decision-making and policy prescriptions.

Government Executive featured a summary chart of all the government departments and major agencies detailed in the budget. It shows what the last budget (FY2017) that was passed planned for each, and how President Trump’s FY2019 budget compares.

What do you think?

What do you see as the administration’s priorities? Do you support those priorities or not? How would you change them, if at all? How would you like to see Congress respond to them when they create the actual budget for FY2019?

Tell us in the comments what you think, then use the Take Action button to tell your reps!

You can't approve a budget that doesn't balance, period. Much less one that increases spending right after you slashed taxes. Tell us what programs you will cut into to afford it. I'm willing to bet your constituents will take issue with where the cuts will come from because it will fall on the working class not those that benefited from the tax cuts.

Trump's budget is pure Trump a big beautiful wall.... an ineffective and unneeded monument to his ego and the gullibility of his beloved base. Paid for by cuts to Programs he deems "non essential". Non essential unless you are a school child who needs extra food or tutoring. Poor people who depend on "entitlements" such as food or shelter, health care, the list goes on and on. Mexico won't pay for Trump's wall. It will be built at an untold cost to the most vulnerable Of Americans people and the loss of life and loss of quality of life will send out ripples of pain and disfunction through the fabric of our society for decades to come.

It is clear that he doesn't care about Health and Human Services and that speaks volumes. The humans in this country are no longer considered important taking a backseat to corporations.

This budget document is proof that the current administration has no concept of governmental accounting, budgeting, debt, and deficit. 2020 cannot arrive soon enough.

The president's proposed budget is ridiculous. Just another reason, in a very long list, of why he should be impeached. There is an online petition that you can sign for impeachment.

Mr Trumps tax law adds $1.5 TRILLION to the deficit, Mr Trumps budget plan would add another $2-7 TRILLION. So much for conservatism. The US ranks 38 out of 71 (PISA) in EDU standards globally BUT Mr Trump needs a Bigger Military?! Congress, this is a slow motion car crash. Put out the nail strips and take control. This isn’t about your jobs, it’s about our country. #Vote2018 #Vote2020 like our Democracy depends on it.

Why are we punishing student loan borrowers for a system that have placed the educational burden squarely on their shoulders? By eliminating programs that help pay back loans, and limit options while increasing punitive measures, we are dampening our future and dissuading students from engaging in socially critical employment generating more disparity private wealth and public good.

This stupid budget proposal matters be because I will have to pay for this with a reduced paycheck, limited Medicare coverage, no social security. The next elected democratic president will have to do what every democratic president has done for years attempt to fix the deficit mess created by Republican Presidents who spend my money like it grows on trees!

This is devastating, commerce is THE ONLY non militarized department not getting slashed funds. This is what every dystopian Hollywood movie assumes. Watch this take away life support for the people and metaphorically stab them. The largest defense budget on earth just can’t have enough drones and next gen destruction tools, so the budget cuts off what was left of human vision. Don’t stop here, message your reps and take to the streets

Why don't lies matter? Seriously, all joking aside, Bart, I.Got.an.Idea, OlderNWiser , Brian, RadicalModerate, Pamela, or anybody. I, honestly want to know how it is that a person can remain president when he averages 5.9 lies per day! The republicans aren't that stupid the wealthy Dems falling for it aren't that stupid. So, we aren't 2000+ outright lies from our commander in chief enough to get him declared unfit for office? The 25th amendment is in the constitution, why isn't it being used? We all laugh about the similarities between Trump and Hitler but no one laughs about all the jews killed in the Nazi interment camps or the millions that died. No, we all sigh and say what a shame it is that Hitler wasn't stopped sooner or blame the surrounding countries for allowing Hitler to become such a threat. But the rhetoric out of 45 is nearly the same. Swap out the jewish people for hispanics and you have a match. So, why isn't something being done to remove the leader of the free world from becoming an even greater threat?

I think the federal government should privatize the US Postal Service, Amtrak, TSA and many many other organizations in order to reduce the size of government and the budget. I heard Trump is looking into doing a lot of that.

Have a great idea let’s give Donald Trump a small box of Canned goods and maybe some peanut butter to feed his family once a month and $800 a month as an income And see if he can budget that.

Why would this huge budget surprise anybody? The republicans are obviously taking the $1.5 trillion they gave to themselves with the tax cut, from the social programs, of which those people are now finding out “what the hell they have to lose”. Fat Nixon (thanks Bill Maher) has got to be stopped before he does actually end this world!

Food boxes “blue apron-like” instead of food stamps is un-america it takes away the poor individual’s agency and choice. ~Glad we have some of wealthiest America’s solving the poorest Americans problems working so hard to trickle down their monies~ trump’s budget and tax cuts will favor the rich and drive the poor into debt... be progressive, tax the wealthiest Americans at a much higher rate, and impeach. Stop running a deficit
