White House Unveils $1.5 Trillion Infrastructure Plan

by Countable | 2.12.18

What’s the story?

President Donald Trump has officially released his long-awaited infrastructure overhaul to repair and rebuild the nation’s highways, bridges, railroads, airports, seaports, and water systems.

What’s in the Legislative Outline for Rebuilding Infrastructure in America?

The $1.5 trillion infrastructure plan focuses on five main goals:

  • Stimulate at least $1.5 trillion in new investment over the next 10 years.

  • Shorten the process for approving projects to 2 years or less.

  • Address unmet rural infrastructure needs.

  • Empower State and local authorities.

  • Train the American workforce of the future.

Why does it matter?

"The reforms set forth in my plan will strengthen the economy, make our country more competitive, reduce the costs of goods and services for American families, and enable Americans to build their lives on top of the best infrastructure in the world," Trump said in the White House document.

The government would only contribute $200 billion towards the package—state and local governments, and private investment, would foot much of the bill.

Democrats have denounced the $200 billion figure as too small.

"Trump’s plan is just another giveaway to corporations and wealthy developers at the expense of American workers, and it fails to address some of the most pressing infrastructure needs our country faces," the Democratic National Committee wrote in an email to reporters upon the proposal’s release.

But Tom Donohue, president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, praised the overhaul:

"For years, plenty of people have been willing to talk about modernizing our nation’s infrastructure, but few have been willing to take action. We applaud the Trump administration for laying out its vision for moving ahead on this critical issue."

What do you think?

Do you support Trump’s infrastructure plan and its goals? Or would you like to see something else? Should the federal government commit more funds to infrastructure? Hit Take Action and tell your reps, then share your thoughts below.

This is just effort by this administration to privatize American infrastructure which will be a disaster for everyday Americans. This country needs a real infrastructure program modeled after the New Deal. What this administration is doing will lead to Americans paying more for toll fees in order to drive on roads and strap state and local governments for money because contracting out these services will be more expensive since these private companies are going to want to make as much profit as possible on these projects. This just another scam that the Trump administration is trying to sell to the public.

Just another Trump privatization scheme to enrich primarily himself with skim and payoffs and then his Mar-a-Largo bed buddies.

This is not an infrastructure plan. This is a disaster. Remove all funding proposed for the wall and include it in infrastructure improvements

Promote and support House Resolution 63 instead! We do not need private investors controlling our critical infrastructure! Do you have a daily toll for your cimmute to work? Do you like it? If you answered no to either, then do not support Trump's proposal!

Having only 200 billion being paid by the federal govt is just absurd. Although it gives the power to the state and local governments, it also puts pressure on these governments. I seriously doubt that rural governments will have enough money to make this happen

The U.S. infrastructure has been degrading for years. Liberal organizations and politicians have pushed infrastructure improvements projects and legislation for decades, while the Republicans have fought against it. Now, Republicans want to take ownership of the idea of infrastructure improvements and make it appear as if they have created the idea that it needs to be addressed urgently. It is only urgent, in some cases, because Republicans have kicked the can down the road for so many decades, passing it off to later generations, until it must be replaced at a substantial cost. This bill and Republican agenda is part of the fleecing of America. They will tell you that the only way to accomplish this is via private ventures and they will blame Democrats for the justification. This is their way of giving a huge chunk of America to corrupt, unethical Corporations. This legislation and program must be reviewed ethically, and must be reviewed by university ethics programs. We cannot continue to give away America piece by piece until we lose all freedoms to an authoritarian Corporation and pay tolls to drive on its roads and walk on its sidewalks and to turn on the lights, while you use its infrastructure. You are freely giving away what our ancestors fought for.

Although improving our infrastructure should be a top priority for federal, state, and local governments, I don’t trust the Trump Administration to go about this initiative in a way that will be beneficial for everyone.

What a joke. The republicans will send us into another recession. The democrats will have to clean it up AGAIN. They screwed up with the tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations.

Here’s an idea: Since most of the $1.5 trillion tax cut went to corporations, how about we let those corporations put up most of the $1.5 trillion to maintain the infrastructure that they use to move their goods and raw materials from state to state and in and out of the country.

And 45 claims Federal Dollars won’t be used. The Private sector will pay for the project. Then they become the owners of that project. Uh Huh. And Mexico will pay for that damn wall. Right. I’m calling BS. Congress had better stand up to this. I live with a budget and so should 45. Period.

This administration does not have the intelligence to come up with an actual plan, it’s much simpler for them to push it off to privatization then to have to work at developing a plan themselves.

This so called plan is DOA with the federal government only paying for 10%. Demagogue djt is using putin’s playbook to destroy our country from within. Look for djt to continue pitting Americans against each other. We should all put out what WE the 2/3 majority want and ignore djt. Create veto proof legislation. Work TOGETHER.

There is nothing more important to this country at the moment than our president. What I want to know is what are you planning on doing to protect this country and it’s people from literally everything he does. I could give you a huge list but it’s been done. You’re all grown men. You know what’s happening. So you either agree with it or your scared. So I say this to you all. Man up or we find someone else who will.

My main concerns with this is that the spending is getting out of control. This is on top of the budget that was passed, so if the 3-5% growth is not maintained in the next ten years we will have added trillions the deficit. And it looks like the economy is going to take a hit when interest rates begin to rise. Secondly, this will burden many state and local governments, many of which are already struggling. Don’t be surprised if this adds new taxes are those levels. On the plus side, the country needs this, especially while making jobs easier to do from beginning to end. It is also nice that the states/locals will be able to dictate which jobs get addressed first. This will allow states to prioritize projects that are more important than others instead of having the feds tell them what they can and can’t fix.
