Senate Debates Immigration Reform - This Week in Congress

by Countable | 2.15.18

This week Congress will take its first step toward advancing an immigration proposal that addresses the status of the "Dreamers" — unauthorized immigrants who were brought to the country as children.

The Senate convenes Monday to start the debate on immigration reform with a procedural vote that will kickoff an open amendment process which senators will use to introduce a variety of proposals throughout the week. What their final bill will include is anyone’s guess at this point, but we’ll be covering it for you here at Countable.

The House will begin its week Tuesday when it considers a bill to sanction Hamas for the use of civilians as human shields, and a resolution calling for the recovery and identification of all missing and unaccounted for U.S. military personnel. Wednesday the House will consider bills related to mortgage disclosures for title insurance charges and interest rates on loans sold or transferred to a nonbank. The House will then vote Thursday on a bill establishing a program to educate state and local governments and property owners on strategies for promoting access to public accommodations for persons with disabilities.

Check here throughout the week to see the vote results and updates to the schedule.

Please pass a clean DACA bill allowing these people to continue to contribute to our country. They are not the people we have to worry about. See Countryfirst’s comment. Well said.

Please provide Dreamers with the opportunity to remain here and contribute. I have heard too many stories of families, good people, being torn apart. They deserve more than this.

The citizens of the United States demand a clean, respectful, compassionate DACA bill. One that settles this problem once and for all. You are directed to stop playing games with the lives of these innocent people. We, and they, are not your pawns.

80% of the country wants to keep DACA! Any chance you could all actually do the job we elected you to do...which is our will? We the people are the ones in charge. Do what we ask or get voted out. We are sick and tired of you partisan stuff! Enough already!

Everybody acts like the DACA people are without fault. They deserve the opportunity to remain in this country but that is all. Their parents should have thought of the consequences when they snuck them illegally across the border.

Things in this country will not change if we continue to let both political parties shower their base with goodies once they get into power. So if we have a ‘blue wave’ in 2018, can we count on more welfare funding? Neither extreme is good for our country or citizens. The madness needs to stop.

Since the United States of America was stolen from the Mexican and Native American people living here, it is particularly ironic to heap hatred upon Dreamers and to demonize them. Our history of being a nation of immigrants with our history of every bizarre racism that can be devised makes the National will for a clean DACA bill imperative. Tearing apart families and lives is unfortunately becoming a more and more representative Republican stance. We are a country declining into a fascist dictatorship. Help!

Please provide Dreamers with a clean bill that includes a path to citizenship. This is the country that they know and serve. They’re innocent victims who can be true assets and many already are.

Again SADLY 😢 the DNC, Senator Schumer, And Representative Pelosi are playing a dirty game of politics while using the DACA folks as a pawn in their efforts. Sadly 😔 we will once again be seeing our Democratic Friends across the isle using their tried and true tactic of Deny..... Delay..... Procrastination in their actions, as we’ve often seen them do in the past. We have seen Senator Schumer, once again back off on his DACA offer including funds for the wall after President Trump offered to a pathway for citizenship for qualifying 1.8 million young (+/- 3X what Senator Schumer initially asked for) undocumented immigrants with funds for building the border walls and fencing. Will we see their efforts fail, for it appears that it’s their primary goal is to get their DACA (Dreamers) bill desires passed? We’ve seen our President, offer a proposal which was/is 3X the number of Dreamers eligible to a path of citizenship, which all of a sudden does NOT meet their political agenda. Senator Schumer & Representative Pelosi are hoping that they are creating enough support with their DACA rhetoric, of increasing their base support, during the 2018 Mid-Term elections. 2*11*18.

No DACA without wall, end CHAIN migration, no green cards without jobs, never voting, and no felonies. No citizenship without formal process of immigration AT THE BACK OF THE LINE.

Enough debate! A clean DACA bill is what over 80% of the nation wants. You better believe #45 and a few GOP members will hold the DACA’s hostage for funding of The Wall promised by #45. We must all remember the actions of these representatives (including #45), for the midterm elections and 2020 elections will be here soon. Unless a wall can extend to the skies, it will be fruitless. Terrorists usually fly in from other countries. Also, as horrific as it is to think of, some terrorists are homegrown within the US. A minute percentage of illegals coming into the US through the border end up as criminals. Most do their best to make a living to create a better life for their family. Just as the parents of the Dreamers did!

There is nothing more important to this country at the moment than our president. What I want to know is what are you planning on doing to protect this country and it’s people from literally everything he does. I could give you a huge list but it’s been done. You’re all grown men. You know what’s happening. So you either agree with it or your scared. So I say this to you all. Man up or we find someone else who will.

DACA recipients (the 700,000) should be allowed to stay. Not their fault. But that’s it. Then they can get in line with others who have been waiting years to be US citizens. And what have they been doing all these years? Why haven’t they applied already? Also, end chain migration, end the visa lottery and build the wall. Base citizenship on merit. How much can current citizens withstand paying for MANY of these people through entitlements? Take care of citizens first. And legal immigrants should assimilate and learn English. If we continue down current road, we will no longer be the great nation we used to be. We will all be too poor to take care of anybody.

Let's not get muddled down with"dreamers". They're still illegal aliens that need to pursue the necessary steps to citizenship that are already in place. If they truly want to become a citizen, there's already a way to do it.

Unfortunately I have no faith in this Congress to pass, or even consider, compassionate legislation to permanently protect our Dreamers. They have given, and continue to give us, their all. We should do no less for them.
