Support SB 220: to enact gun store security best practices to prevent guns from being stolen from stores and making their way onto our streets.

Gun store robberies are on the rise, especially those of the smash and grab nature. According to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the number of gun store robberies/burglaries in California increased 67 percent between 2013 and 2017. From 2012 to 2017, 1,671 firearms have been reported stolen from federally licensed gun dealers in the state. The majority of those firearms were stolen during break-ins. Of those stolen weapons, 73 percent – 1,219 firearms – were taken during burglaries of licensed dealers in California.

California gun store owners security measures, independent of each other, have proven to be insufficient to prevent against theft, especially when a vehicle is used as a battering ram.

SB 220 implements best practices for storing guns when a gun store is closed for business. The bill will help reduce the number of successful robberies of gun stores throughout the state.
