The Virginia Senate voted unanimously to pass a bill legalizing cannabidiol oil or THC-A oil for the treatment of any medically diagnosed condition or disease.
Last week, a companion bill was passed, also unanimously, in the Virginia House of Delegates.
State Sen. Siobhan Dunnavant, the chief patron of the Senate bill, and a practicing OB/GYN, said, "I finally decided that I needed to advocate for the physicians being the decision makers." She added:
"We, physicians, are the ones that follow the literature and know which treatments are best for different conditions. The literature on medical cannabis is going to be evolving rapidly now, and because of this, it is not a decision that should be in the hands of the legislature. Instead, it should be with physicians."
My legislation to #LetDoctorsDecide just passed the Senate with a 40-Y 0-N vote! I am so excited about helping providers gain access to every possible tool to help decrease their patients' suffering. Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam, who's also a physician, is on record supporting the Let Doctors Decide legislation.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced last month that the DOJ was ending the policy that allowed states to relax restrictions on recreational pot without the threat of federal interference.
Do you support medicinal marijuana? Or do you agree with Sessions that "good people don't smoke marijuana"? Hit Take Action and tell your reps how you feel about states challenging federal pot laws, then share your thoughts below.

The war on Marijuana has ruined the lives of millions of people and their families lives. I can only imagine the Trillions of dollars that went into arrests, courts, private prisons, etc. state by state the country is being decriminalized. Take Marijuana off of schedule 1 and end the war.
Cannabis is a generally superb drug extremely helpful for many conditions. Especially with the opioid crisis, it is only wise to give access to cannabis which reduces opioid abuse. Alcohol is much more damaging than cannabis every-way. We know how well Prohibition worked so our ostensible Attorney General Sessions needs to support cannabis nationally, remove the ludicrous Schedule I designation, and take care of the people, not prison profits. Capitalism has run amok creating widespread suffering, until we’re thrilled and astounded at good caring legislation
Yay for Virginia! It’s a start in the right direction.
Congratulations Virginia. One more step on the road to full legalization.
Another rational state weighs in! Keep moving forward and stop the ignorance of Jeff Sessions
I fully support the legalization of marijuana in general, but especially medical marijuana in its many forms. The evidence is clear. It performs as well or better than many synthetic pharmaceuticals, but with none of the side effects. It should’ve been legalized ages ago, not to mention the jobs that are potentially created by the industry. At this point, it’s simply common sense to legalize. I expect y’all to get it done, please and thank you.
Sick people are not bad people. Sometimes smoking pot is the difference between vomiting and not vomiting so you can keep your job and your health insurance so you can complete Chemo. Repukicans need to grow a heart. Everything you do is inhumane.
Yay for Virginia! Marijuana should be Federally approved for the entire country!
Good for them. I have talked with folks who have been addicted to morphine and opioids. Once they got a prescription for marijuana then were able to kick their habits. Said they only use the ingest able type. Both have more issues and did not want the inhaling marijuana. They were so glad to get off the drug problem.
It’s time to remove Marijuana and Hemp from Schedule 1 Drug level.
Good for Virginia, marijuana has many medicinal uses, and our doctors should be the ones making these decisions. Sessions is a bigot who just wants an excuse to lock more people up. He probably also has money invested in the private prison industry.
Gee ya think About time they let doctors do their jobs
Marijuana is no more dangerous than alcohol - probably less so. The states that have legalized recreational MJ have not had any major problems, and have reaped numerous benefits. I do not think teenagers should use it, but then I don’t think they should be drinking or using prescription drugs, either. The argument that it is a gateway to opioids is outrageous, and not backed by any facts. Jeff Sessions is the old Reefer Madness misinformation in its present incarnation. More legalization = more good research.
Congrats to Virginia. There is proof of efficacy of medical marijuana.
The supreme irony here is that republicans, who have championed the concept of “states rights” for decades, are now supporting federal strongarm tactics and threats by AG “Recuse Me” Sessions on the bankrupt federal position on marijuana. The man is pathetically out of touch with the issue, as is the case with reducing the incarceration rate - a travesty that makes America the laughingstock of the free, civilized world.
This was a great decision because marijuana is the key to a lot of ailments and has the ability to probably have the same effect as 90% of pills that exist.
Congratulations, someone has common sense
Great news. The decision is now where it belongs, in the hands of trained medical professionals
I support Virginia legalizing marijuana. It’s time to legalize, tax and research it for medical purposes.
