UK Lawmakers Debate Downgrading Trump Visit and More In Politics Today

by Countable | 2.20.17

It’s difficult to stay up-to-date on what’s happening in this country and to break through the clutter, so we’re here to make it easier. Here’s what we at Countable are reading today:

1. "Amid protests, U.K. lawmakers debate downgrading Trump visit"

"Thousands of protesters against U.S. President Donald Trump rallied outside Britain’s Parliament on Monday, while lawmakers inside urged the government to rescind its offer to the president of a state visit stamped with pomp, pageantry and royal approval."

In a passionate debate that’s unlikely to change the British government’s position, Trump was labeled a misogynist, a bigot and a petulant child by opposition legislators. They argued that a state visit planned for later this year will demean the U.K. and Queen Elizabeth II, the president’s official host. "

2. "‘Dozens fired’ over immigrants strike"

"More than 100 workers in the U.S. have lost their jobs after taking part in last week's Day Without Immigrants protest. Dozens of people, including construction workers and restaurant staff, reported being fired after staying at home on Thursday. The protest aimed to highlight the contribution of immigrants in the U.S."

"Businesses and schools across the US faced widespread disruption on Thursday as workers and students took part in a strike over President Donald Trump's hard-line stance on immigration. In a news conference last week, Mr Trump said he would publish a new executive order after the U.S. courts stymied his previous attempt to bar the entry of immigrants from seven mostly Muslim countries."

3. "Associates of Trump push backdoor plan for Ukraine"

"At a time when President Donald Trump’s ties to Russia, and the people connected to him, are under heightened scrutiny — with investigations by American intelligence agencies, the F.B.I. and Congress — some of his associates remain willing and eager to wade into Russia-related efforts behind the scenes."

"But [a] proposal [for Ukraine] contains more than just a peace plan. Andrii V. Artemenko, the Ukrainian lawmaker, who sees himself as a Trump-style leader of a future Ukraine, claims to have evidence — “names of companies, wire transfers" — showing corruption by the Ukrainian president, Petro O. Poroshenko, that could help oust him..”

4. "Senator seeks answers on border cell phone searches"

"Can the government demand you unlock your phone at the airport? A senior Senate Democrat is demanding the Department of Homeland Security explain reports that it's doing just that."

"Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden, a senior member of the Senate Intelligence Committee and privacy hawk, is set to send a letter to DHS Secretary John Kelly calling reports that Americans were required to unlock their smartphones "deeply troubling," asking what legal authority allows for it."

5. "Russia's U.N. envoy Churkin dies suddenly in New York"

"Russia's combative ambassador to the United Nations, Vitaly Churkin, died suddenly in New York on Monday after being taken ill at work, the Russian Foreign Ministry said. The ministry gave no details on the circumstances of his death but offered condolences to his relatives and said the diplomat had died one day before his 65th birthday. It declined to comment on reports that Churkin had been taken to a hospital shortly before his death."

"The New York Post quoted unnamed sources as saying Churkin had been rushed to a Manhattan hospital from the Russian embassy after falling ill with a cardiac condition.

President Vladimir Putin was deeply upset by the news and had greatly valued Churkin's professionalism and diplomatic talent, Russian news agencies quoted the Kremlin as saying."

THEY DID IT! They actually did it! British British Parliament Saves the Queen!! Parliament just gave Trump the middle finger and told him to get stuffed! This is unprecedented, no country has ever told a US president that they are an unwelcome guest and not allowed a state visit. 🙌🏼🏰🇬🇧 The UK just stood up and did what Americans SHOULD have done on November 8th-- Said NOT NO BUT HELL NO to a Trump presidency. I continue to be embarrassed of our current Administration. Sadly, but expectedly, we are the laughing stock of the World.

Please take action to stop this president from going around the world spreading his poison. He does not represent the majority of the American people as seen in the popular vote. The destruction of our long held European alliances are detrimental to peace in the world.

It is sad when subordinates of the president have to travel the world to explain what he means because POTUS makes stuff up as he goes along and then the real public servants have to explain what America really meant to say. And this Fake News thing is running thin when the administration talks about Bowling Green, Sweden, false election results, election fraud in New Hampshire... most false news is not from news.

U.K. Do yourself a huge favor and tell trumpet and his band of freaks not to come over and visit at this time. If you allow this idiot and his freak show to visit you will be exposing yourselves and your constituents to this unhinged, unglued and reckless idiot virus which run ramped amongst the trumpets and their followers. Just say NO trumpet you are not allowed as U.K. has recently implemented an extreme vetting program aimed at keeping idiots like trumpet and his cabinet out of the U.K.

He does not merit a state visit or an audience with Queen Elizabeth. He also didn't merit stepping foot in our White House, but unfortunately we are stuck with him for now. Other countries don't have to be.

The queen or her family and representatives are under no obligation to meet with him. If Teresa wants to take a cup of tea with him at 10 Downing Street I'm sure she can. I doubt the majority of brits will be all that happy with him visiting and will be taking note of which members of parliament open their arms to him and voting accordingly in their next elections. What a logistical and fiscal nightmare for security forces when he does visit. He needs to stop running up his travel bill with our taxpayer dollars anyway stay home at the wh and deal with the issues here first and start reducing the debt.

Let's hear it for the U.K. The people have spoken and they didn't want our clown of a president speaking before their parliament.

I support UK not accepting a visit from Trump. He is a bafoon and an embarrassment to America. The sooner we impeach him the better, so he can no longer make us the laughing stock of the world and so he can no longer be a liability to the world and a threat to our national security!

I fully support the visit to the U.K. Being downgraded. The thought of the man in the Oval Office having an audience with the Queen not only sickens me, but worries me. He already (mistakenly) views himself as omnipotent and respected by all. Please don't pander to his ego. yes, the relationship between the U.S. and U.K. is a unique one, but his policies of intolerance do not deserve to be honored. Our feelings won't be hurt if you don't recognize him in your esteemed houses, we don't want him in ours either.

First of all Theresa May should not of extended the offer in the first place without Parliamentary approval. Secondly I'm glad they downgraded the tour. He has already attacked Prince Charles and the Queen at 90 years of age doesn't need to meet with an imbecile.

I wholeheartedly agree with Britain's decision to deny him the honor of a State visit and applaud them for standing up to him. By the same token, what a shameful day for America; being represented by someone so disrespected by other nations. This does not bode well for our future.

And how much exactly is this trip going to cost taxpayers?!? Obama was chastised for taking two trips per year, but Trump can have full details for a wife in NYC, and 4 adult kids traveling the globe to close deals for the business he has not yet relinquished!?! His first MONTH as president has cost taxpayers MORE than an ENTIRE YEAR of Obama's!!! Is he going to use this trip to set up more patents for his business? More conflicts of interest!? More open abuse of power and disregard for what the Presidency of the United States stands for and who he ultimately reports to?!?! All the while, you guys stand by, ignore your conscientious and do NOTHING!!!

This illegitimate potus should not be allowed to embarrass us in any other country by visiting and wasting more taxpayer dollars. Isn't it enough we are paying 1 million a day to keep Rapunzel in the tower, those idiot children traveling promoting his business he still has control over. His 10 million already for taking vacations three weekends in a row. Please keep him locked up in the White House.
