Monday evening the House Intelligence Committee voted unanimously to release a Democratic memo, authored primarily by Rep. Adam Schiff (CA) and his staff, that is widely reported to be a counter to the GOP memo released on Friday. The GOP memo alleged that the FBI inappropriately used the controversial Steele dossier to secure a FISA warrant to conduct surveillance on Trump campaign advisor Carter Page.
The White House now has five days to authorize release of the Democratic memo to the public and make any redactions they deem necessary to protect "intelligence sources and methods". Schiff expressed concern after the Monday night decision that the White House might redact the document for political reasons, reports the Washington Post.
The Democratic memo is reported to put the GOP allegations in a wider context. Democrats say it shows that the information purported in the Steele dossier was only part of a long list of reasons provided to the FISA judge to request the original surveillance warrant. They also point out that the approval of an extension of the original warrant was only possible because credible evidence had been uncovered in the initial surveillance.
After the release of the GOP memo Friday various Republican lawmakers, including Speaker Paul Ryan, have advocated the release of the Democratic memo, reports the New York Times.
President Trump began Monday by attacking Schiff and praising Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), who led the GOP effort to write and release the GOP memo.
Little Adam Schiff, who is desperate to run for higher office, is one of the biggest liars and leakers in Washington, right up there with Comey, Warner, Brennan and Clapper! Adam leaves closed committee hearings to illegally leak confidential information. Must be stopped!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 5, 2018
Representative Devin Nunes, a man of tremendous courage and grit, may someday be recognized as a Great American Hero for what he has exposed and what he has had to endure!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 5, 2018
Officially, the White House has said they are open to supporting the release of the Democratic memo as long as any classified information that could endanger sources methods were redacted. The GOP memo was also reviewed by the White House, but no information was redacted.
Should the Democratic memo be released to the public following White House review, as the GOP version was?

Forget the memo. Impeach Trump.
One rotten apple spoils the barrel and it is obvious the Rot from the Oval Office spreads through Congress. Nunes defended his memo & attacked the Muller investigation on Fox & Friends, stating that George Papadopolos did not even know who Trump was and vice versa. Photographic evidence shows George in a strategy meeting at the table with Trump and Sessions. Mr. Nunes, I'm an elderly NC great grandmother and even I have been aware of that photo for weeks. Could you be so ill informed, or is it just possible, bless your little heart, that you are a blatant liar.?! Congress needs to bipartisanly demand that the Democratic memo be released & while you're are at it Remove Nunes from his post on the Committee!
Yes, of course the Democratic memo should also be released. If the Republicans and Trump are as for “transparency” as they claim this shouldn’t be an issue. Why weren’t they as concerned about revealing surveillance methods with their memo by the way?
It should not be the guy that is being investigated to decide what should be redacted. Come on already. How dumb is that.
Release the Democratic memo. Americans deserve a complete picture, not just a cherry-picked, one-sided, inaccurate propaganda piece.
How long are we going to let the republicans get away with this EXTREME partisanship! Democrats need to sharpen their teeth!!! If you can’t get them to approve the memo then leak the damn thing!
I’ve got a memo of my own. “Democrats and Republicans. Please do something to earn my trust and respect.”
I'm sick of all the party politics. We all know that Trump is going to redact any info that will connect him to Russia or that puts Republicans or himself in a bad light. Just impeach him already and let's move on to fixing the disaster he's created.
Release ALL memos! Quit with the “this is the tip of the iceberg” act!
Of course, release the Democratic memo to give us the full story.
The Democrat’s memo should be released. But we must all understand that its intent is to protect the guilty and treasonous individuals in the DNC, DOJ and FBI . Whereas the Republican memo was written to exposed the corruption in order to protect our democracy and the American people.
Not that this will do any good. Unfortunately. The true trumpets will just enjoy having their heads in the sand. They will willfully ignore anything that criticizes their Dear Leader.
If the democratic party’s memo is not released we the American people will hear what trump and the Republican Party is saying loud and clear we are guilty of all charges and will do anything to prevent the truth being know... do your jobs and protect the American people the constitution and your constituents not trump or your party!
I hope that congressional republicans are seeing Congressman Nunes’ memo for the smokescreen it is, and won’t put much stock in it. This memo isn’t even an official investigation, it’s the equivalent of a meme on social media. And it is only four pages! The POTUS and certain republicans and Fox News (where the president admits he gets his information) want to say that a four page memo discredits the FBI and Justice Department? I have had to write longer papers just to graduate high school, and had to actually cite my sources. The evidence that has been made accessible to the public contradicts this memo’s concerns. 1. The acting directors of the FBI and DOJ were appointed by president trump himself, and are openly Republican. That’s not liberal bias against the president. If anything, it shows that these two entities are run by people on the president’s own political team. Finding any information on the trump campaign’s possible collusion with Russia hurts members of their own political team. That’s not bias, that’s actually reason to trust in their investigation. 2. Mueller was appointed by the acting director of the FBI and AG Sessions, people appointed by president trump himself. If they are acting with bias against the president, he is directly responsible for that bias, since he didn’t do due diligence in determining possible bias. And if the president cannot be trusted to do due diligence when appointing unbiased directors, what does that say about his own abilities to do his job correctly? 3. Peter Strzok can hardly be called biased against trump, when he himself released the memo regarding Hillary Clinton‘s emails shortly before the election. If he is biased against trump, why would he release a memo that would help him get elected? 4. President trump himself said in an interview with Lester Holt that he fired FBI Director Comey “because of the Russia thing,” and would have done so regardless of any advice he was given. Shortly after this interview, Robert Mueller was appointed, to the praise of both sides of the aisle. But the moment Mueller starts making indictments and getting guilty pleas from members of trump’s team, Mueller cannot be trusted? 5. Even Seam Hannity and Fox News confirms reports that president trump tried ordering Mueller’s termination, shortly after he was appointed Special Prosecutor. 6. Innocent people generally do not need to do this much mudslinging to prove their innocence. They don’t need whole news networks working tirelessly to distract from the investigation with red herrings and straw men and false dichotomies. It doesn’t matter what the Clintons did in the 90s, because they didn’t possibly collude with Russia in 2016, Donald Trump did. And notice the president and his team and congressional Republicans don’t actually deny collusion or obstruction, they attack the news medias that relentlessly cover it. In any legal case, a person’s character is often used to show a pattern of behavior. The president has an established pattern of saying or tweeting one thing, and denying that he ever did the next, despite videotape evidence. He told his base to inflict violence on hecklers, and that he would pay the legal fees. And denied saying it, when one of his base did just that. So at what point will the GOP stop defending this man, and start holding him accountable? Because we all know that if it were Hillary Clinton, or even Bernie Sanders, in office, facing these same allegations, tax payers would be funding a fourth or fifth investigation by now. But since Game knows Game, and it looks bad on the RNC for endorsing trump’s candidacy, you all have been working very hard to distract from the facts. And that is not doing your constitutional duty.
Of course the Democratic memo should be released. Last I knew memo did not mean truth but rather one person‘s perspective, or in this case, one party’s perspective. We are so fast deteriorating into a fascist dictatorship that each day brings a fresh new terror. Please do everything in your power to protect all our people, to protect our civil rights, and to allow truth—not POTUS propaganda— be seen and heard.
This is just a distraction from the truth and we the people don’t buy anything from the Dems. They have already proven to America that they are the problem.
The Democratic memo must be released. Since the republican memo was released and has been shown to be a ‘trumped’ up concoction of selective ‘cut and paste’ half truths designed to undercut the ongoing investigation into obstruction of justice and collusion with a foreign adversary. Aside from it’s myopic political purpose the republican memo serves as fodder for the small but vocal base.
Seems Republicans welcome transparency after all voting to release the Democratic response memo. It's a shame you can't say the same about Democrats.
Yes, release ALL pertinent memos, and let the bodies hit the floor! This administration has nothing to hide, but DO notice Democrats voted against the Republican memo release, but the vote to release the Democrat memo was unanimous! That speaks volumes IMO.
This is encouraging! The Nunes memo should not be the only perspective shared.
