SOTU: ‘We have ended the war on American energy’

by Countable | 2.1.18

What’s the story?

During his State of the Union Address, President Donald Trump declared:

"We have ended the war on American energy. And we have ended the war on beautiful clean coal. We are now very proudly an exporter of energy to the world."

What is ‘Clean Coal’?

The phrase was created by advertising agency R&R Partners in 2008 to refer to coal companies working to reduce the carbon emissions caused by burning coal.

What is the state of American energy?

Coal

As Newsweek reported, "it is true that 771 net coal miners were hired in 2017, but the death toll also doubled to 15, up from eight in 2016. The majority of coal-producing states actually lost jobs last year."

Solar and wind

Newsweek also noted that the "the solar and wind industries still employed nearly three times as many people as the coal industry."

Earlier this month, the president announced the U.S. would slap a 30 percent tax on imported solar panels. The Solar Energy Industries Association estimates that the move will cost 23,000 American jobs.

Oil and gas

According to a forecast this month by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the country won’t become a net exporter of energy until 2026.

The EIA data does show that natural gas production reached a record level in December 2017, and that oil production is expected to expand this year and next. However, hydraulic fracking surged under former President Barack Obama.

Last month, the Trump administration announced plans to allow offshore oil and gas drilling in nearly all U.S. waters.

While ending the war on "American" energy, trump has declared war on our lungs, our water, our food sources, animals, plants and trees, myriad of species, alternative clean energy, solar panels, streams, rivers, natural habitat and...have I forgotten anything? God's Creation maybe? The most dangerous president ever. He's so happily cruel and determinedly ignorant about cause and effect. Clean Coal? No...COPD for All. It's just plain unfair that my future is in his hands and that my republican elected officials don't stop him.

This president apparently has move money invested in the fossil fuel industries than in clean energy industries. Everything he does is for one of four reasons: (1) to make himself money (2) to reverse anything done by Obama (3) to keep his base believing in his lies and (4) to piss off the Democrats that ignored him for years in NYC. His regulation rollback campaign will cost even more American lives, either at work or at home. He is dangerous, destructive and ignorant of the world as it exists today.

This is absurd. Why would we reduce our ability to produce energy by tariffing solar panels thus costing jobs? Lobbying from the coal, gas, and oil industry is why. Please stand up for us and fight those who have perverse incentives to act against the interests of the American people.

He can’t say that climate change is a hoax and emphasize the mythical “clean coal” at the same time. That’s called cognitive dissonance. The real war is on progress and protecting the environment. Stop this and turn course!

Take things into your own hands. Just refuse to be a customer. Solar panels, electric cars, buses & trains. Many small communities have gone solar in all their municipal govt buildings. Take the profit out of coal and oil by not buying the products. That will shut them down faster than any laws.

How do you reconcile a recommendation to cut the budget for renewable energy development by over 2/3 with having ended the “war on energy”? Or the tariff on imported solar panels without enough time to develop domestic production to meet the demand? Seems like we are not all using the same definition of energy.

I have lived in this country all my life and still don’t understand why solar and wind isn’t a long-term and safe solution. I know it comes down to money in the pockets of powerful people. This too shall pass.

I have heard that there are clean ways to use coal, but why should we use coal when there are alternatives. Strip mining is destroying mountains. Underground mining is dangerous. Wind and sun are the way.

There is no such thing as clean coal. This myth going to cause the health of many Americans to begin to fail. No one cares and with the constant controversy be no health coverage to help those who cannot help themselves and many will perish.

And reignighted the war on the welfare, the health, and the very survival of the American people. You, the SOTU support deaths of the many for profit of the few. Shameful.
