Individuals on the left have taken to Twitter to share their displeasure with President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.

Here are 16 of the most memorable reactions.

Media and Academia

1_ Offended by the words “church,” “family,” “police,” and “military.”

Joy Reid, a host at MSNBC, said Trump’s speech promoted “1950s-era nationalism.”

2_ Embarrassed by “USA, USA” chanting.

Melissa R. Michelson, professor of political science at Menlo College in Atherton, California, tweeted that she was embarrassed about the chanting.

3_ A Princeton University professor of African-American studies said the address was “officially a Klan rally.”

4_ A University of Maryland, College Park sociologist called it “carnage porn.”


5_ “Self-congratulatory” speech.

“Tonight, the president presented a self-congratulatory speech without vision,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said in a Wednesday press release. “He promised unity, but sowed division. America deserves better.”

6_ Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said the speech was contentious.

7_ Stopped mid-standing ovation.

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., tried to give a standing ovation at one point, but was apparently dissuaded.

8_ Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., told Jake Tapper of CNN in an interview Tuesday night that members of the Congressional Black Caucus did not give a standing ovation when Trump touted that “African-American unemployment stands at the lowest rate ever recorded,” because Trump did not give credit to President Barack Obama.

9_ Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., said Trump’s address promoted “bigotry, hatred, and fear.”


10_ Liberal comedian Sarah Silverman voiced her concern over Trump’s immigration rhetoric.
