Right now in North Carolina, Kanautica Zayre-Brown – a transgender woman of color – is serving her ten year sentence in a men's prison facility.
The State of North Carolina refuses to recognize Kanautica's womanhood and house her appropriately, putting both her physical safety and mental well-being in jeopardy. Kanautica has suffered mistreatment and abuse by other inmates, been placed in a single cell, isolating her from human contact, and has been subjected to discrimination based on her gender identity.
Governor Roy Cooper claimed the state’s Department of Public and Safety is reviewing the case, but North Carolina must correct this before something worse happens to Kanautica.
Sign this petition and call on Governor Roy Cooper to order an immediate transfer so that Kanautica can serve the remainder of her time in a women’s prison facility.
