Trump Grills Media At Press Conference and More in Politics Today

by Countable | 2.16.17

It’s difficult to stay up-to-date on what’s happening in this country and to break through the clutter, so we’re here to make it easier. Here’s what we at Countable are reading today:

1. "Trump says White House ‘fine-tuned machine,’ despite turmoil"

"Donald Trump mounted an aggressive defense of his young presidency Thursday, lambasting reports that his campaign advisers had inappropriate contact with Russian officials and vowing to crack down on the leaking of classified information."

"Nearly a month into his presidency, Trump insisted in a free-wheeling White House news conference that his new administration had made "significant progress" and took credit for an optimistic business climate and a rising stock market."

Read more at The Associated Press.

2. "Trump nixes Obama regulations on coal industry"

"Saying he’s keeping the promise he made to coal miners during his campaign, President Trump on Thursday afternoon nixed regulations on the coal industry implemented during the waning hours of Obama administration."

"Mr. Trump signed legislation to roll back the so-called “Stream Protection Rule," a set of Interior Department regulations that put expensive new requirements on coal companies. Among other things, the rules required coal companies to conduct extensive monitoring of any waterways that potentially could be impacted by mining operations. Those companies also would be required to return any body of water to pre-mining condition and then continue to monitor the quality of that water for years into the future — efforts that were estimated to cost the industry over $50 million per year.”

Read more at The Washington Times.

Read more about the bill that overturned the Stream Protection Rule here at Countable.

3. "Paul Ryan: GOP to introduce Obamacare repeal/replace bill after break"

"House Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday that Republicans will introduce a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare when lawmakers return from next week's recess."

"He said Republicans are waiting to release the legislation until the cost of the bill is estimated by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office and the Joint Committee on Taxation."

""It has become increasingly clear that this law is collapsing," the Wisconsin Republican told reporters at his weekly news conference. He cited Tuesday's announcement by Humana to pull out of Obamacare's health exchanges as another sign that the current system is failing."

4. "Boeing workers reject a union in South Carolina"

"Union organizers fell far short on Wednesday in a bid to enlist workers at Boeing’s South Carolina facilities in what was widely viewed as an early test of labor’s strength in the Trump era."

"Organizers with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers failed to persuade a majority of about 3,000 union-eligible Boeing workers in the state to vote for the union amid enormous pressure from management."

"Boeing said 74 percent of the more than 2,800 workers voting rejected the union."

Read more at [The New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/15/business/boeing-union-south-carolina.html).

5. "Pakistan: IS attack on Sufi shrine in Sindh kills dozens"

"A suicide attack in a popular shrine in southern Pakistan has killed at least 72 people, policy say."

"Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has condemned the attack, which has been claimed by so-called Islamic State."

"A surge of attacks this week has shattered a period of improving security in Pakistan."

I don't care which party you represent, in the end, you have a moral, ethical and legal obligation to protect our nation and its institutions from an absolutely incompetent and delusional man with marginal analysis skills and zero diplomatic skills. I'm appalled almost daily by the chaos and blunt-edged decision-making.

You guys are so immersed in your own agendas that you allow the insanity displayed at today's news conference to go unchallenged. Did anything about that seem normal and sane to you? Please know that despite your best efforts to disassociate yourselves from the President that you are in fact being lumped in with him as "Republicans" - you guys either man up and challenge him or you tether yourselves to him, you can't have it both ways. You are stripping women of their rights, you are removing the teeth from the EPA, you put a completely unqualified person in charge of our kid's educations and you are gutting the ACA with a program that initially seems to favor the haves over the have nots. Not sure how you guys sleep at night but there is a growing group of folks doing everything they can to make sure you have plenty of free time starting in 2018.

I have lived long enough to see a number of presidents office and while I have not always agreed with them, I have never seen one like 45. His inexperience and lack of government knowledge is mind boggling. He has no manners or class, but his mental condition is very frightening.

I want to thank our media for standing up to the bully we have as president -- also our government employees, intelligence community, scientists and others. You are courageous men and women. I hope we all show the same courage when it's our turn under fire.

Please do not continue to support a delusional, small-minded braggart who never ceases to sink to a new low. Ethically, politically, and even in terms of base-line humanity, this president cannot be trusted to keep our country's best interests at heart when he's already lost his credibility after three weeks. His administration is hemorrhaging any sense of honor, decency, and diplomacy that our country has built up over decades of careful work from both sides of the aisle.

The press conference today was humiliating. Is there nothing you can do? Trump is obviously unfit to serve. Utilize the provisions in the 25th amendment to start impeachment proceedings. We can't have a paranoid narcissist running the country.

If you were not horrified or at the very least embarrassed by yesterday's news conference with President Trump, then you also are living in some alternate world. One of the most disturbing aspects to his "news" conference (it was mostly the same old whining about the media and how great he is) was his answer to the question of protests at town hall meetings. He basically said "oh they are democrats so they don't matter". I thought he, and you, are supposed to represent and listen to all citizens. How insulting and demoralizing. His claims about bringing together a divided country are false. And what about the representatives? Are they working for all the people or just for big businesses and some people. What are your plans for bringing compromise and bipartisanship to our nation?

Someone please put the POTUS on a leash so that we don't have to listen to the absolute nonsense that comes out of his mouth. He can't even speak the truth! Making people distrust the media is a very dangerous game in these modern day times. We will need them and their accuracy to tell the truth to keep the American people informed.

How can we balance the effect of a President that uses a media-accelerated cost-free Twitter pulpit that delivers his biased opinions and blatant lies directly to his base? How about a National Public Opinion Polling Center, that can take the public pulse quickly on matters of importance so the politicians and the public can see what the people really think on each issue?

What I saw yesterday was not a Presidential Press Conference. It was the unhinging of a man on the verge of a breakdown. Enough is enough!!! He is a delusional, narcissistic, purveyor of 'alternative facts' and 'fake news'! He promised to release his taxes, however, after his inauguration he had Kellyanne Conway say flat out "he will not be doing that". He lied to and deceived the people who voted for him. He uses misdirection to keep those gullible enough to fall for it from what he is hiding. With the ferocity of a cornered wild animal he attacks anyone that questions, challenges or gets close to areas of vulnerability. Which begs the question "WHAT IS HE HIDING?! Why WON'T HE RELEASE HIS TAXES?! -- AND WHAT IS OUR REPUBLICAN CONGRESS DOING ABOUT IT?!! How can his behavior be supported? We are not safe with him at the helm. Please work to correct our current state of affairs. We are now a frighteningly powerful laughing stock with the White Houses current part time occupant. Oh, that's another issue. Is he ashamed of the House his predecessors were proud to call home? How much is his showing off costing the U.S. TAX PAYERS? And on top of that cost is among other things the price of a wall for which Mexico will never pay. Please tell him THE ELECTION IS OVER!! It's time to lead!! True leaders look ahead, they DO NOT LIVE IN THE PAST! He said he could be the most Presidential -- now is the time for him to PROVE IT!!! If he is either unwilling to or not capable of leading Our Nation the Legislative Branch must wake up and save us before he careens us over the cliff! PLEASE HELP US BY DOING YOUR JOBS.

There is something mentally wrong with an individual who misrepresents facts, blames others for their poor preparation in assuming the highest elected office in the country and who takes credit for things that haven't happened. The president is right to say very few of his cabinet have been confirmed, but it is because he and his transition team were in turmoil and poorly vetted his choices during the post-election cycle. His executive order on immigration was flawed from the moment it was released and blaming "bad" judges for upholding a stay on it is not taking responsibility for rolling out an unconstitutional policy. The accomplishments he cites are ones that role back rules on clean air, clean water and individual liberties. Blaming the press for fake news is diverting the real issue that it is the president and his spokespersons are the ones who have distorted facts. Finally, failing to address the rise of anti-Semitism and claiming it is the work of people not aligned with his team is also a falsehood, as his most senior advisor Stephen Bannon, is a well documented anti-Semite and has a following of likeminded people. Finally, when you compare the stock market in January 2009 to today, it is apparent that the policies of Barack Obama are the reason why the indexes are at record levels, not anything that the new president has done.

I haven't felt this unsafe since the Cuban missile crisis. This cannot be allowed to go on much longer. The president is not fit to lead the US. Who can and WILL take the first step to remove him? He is incompetent in every way.

The "Media Accountability Survey" driven by Trump is a farce. How can you stand idle at this time. I'm a disenfranchised Republican and will remain so as long as I see no accountability for actions or actual proposals for change. Stand up, say something, Protect this great country from Trump. Promoting alt-facts leads to fascist self-justification. Do something that will make me want to vote for you in the next election.

This is a paltry attempt to distract from the real issues we must investigate. The security breaches, unvetted Bannon taking over from within, Russia's interference in our government and elections, the clear conflicts of interest and emoluments violations, and the aggressive anti-human racist agenda being put forth by a white supremacist supported administration. Those are the real issues we must continue pushing a hearing on.
