The Daily Countable: SOTU, Survivors & Some Things Lost In The Shuffle

by Countable | 1.30.18

It's hard to know where to spend your (precious, finite) time focusing your political energy today with all of the political pomp and circumstance surrounding the State of the Union (SOTU), the probable release of the GOP House Intelligence Committee memo, and the departure of Andrew McCabe from the FBI.

For what it's worth, the SOTU is actually happening today, the memo is unlikely to be released until the weekend, and we may never know the whole story about Andrew McCabe. We're focusing our attention on the SOTU, so let's get to it!

One Big Thing

What do you think about the upcoming State of the Union? Will you watch it or any of the official or unofficial responses?

Also, and more interesting to me personally, what do you feel is the state of the union right now? If you had the chance to address a joint session of Congress, what would you tell them?

Check out the responses to all of these questions in this week's Your Turn and add your own.

On the Radar

Who will be the Designated Survivor?

Did you know that dating back to the Cold War there’s been a designated survivor any time a political event occurs that brings the president and his cabinet together in one place? The designated survivor gets a full presidential security detail, and is whisked away to an undisclosed, secure location along with the "nuclear football", which contains the nuclear war codes. According to CBS News, however, the “designated survivor is not briefed on what to do if something actually happened to the president.”

Does that last bit seem strange to you, or is it just me? Why send the football with them if they don't actually know what to do with it? And if they don't, who does? Tom Brady?

Read all about the Designated Survivor and tell us who you think it should be this time.

Under the Radar

Despite the SOTU and the Russia story, it's worth remembering that other things are still happening. For instance, President Trump is likely to mention immigration tonight, but did you know there's a bipartisan proposal on the table to address immigration?

Also, if you're interested in 5G and faster internet, you might like to know that some folks in the administration are looking to nationalize the future 5G network. What do you think of that?

And, finally, the Boundary Waters in Minnesota. They're the lifeblood of the local economy and, some say, a national treasure, but now federal lands adjacent to them could be developed for mining. If you feel strongly about the issue, for or against, now would be the time to weigh in with your member of Congress.

The president broke the law by not imposing the sanctions. I thought we were a law and order country?

I have no intentions and watching the liar in chief on television tonight, I will actually turn my television off during that time and I hope many more will do the same, boycott the State of the Union address. If the television ratings are down you know that will affect the president more than anything else since ratings is his way of valuing his performance. We have a two party government at this time, if the GOP is going to put out the memo on the FBI and the DOJ because of they say transparency then they ought to release the Democratic parties memo as well for actual transparency. Without putting sanctions on the Russian government for interfering in our election, seems to only show that Trump is involved with the Russians more than we know, would really like to see some transparency there.

I have lost any respect for the POTUS and the GOP long ago. I will not waste my time listening to the lies and stupid conspiracy theories. Stormy Daniels (a porn star) has more credibility then all of the GOP combined!! I will however, be tuning into a real leader, Bernie Sanders!! He will be addressing the STOU at 10:45pm on Facebook live. He should have been our POTUS because he is one of the ONLY politicians that cares about and consistently fights for the people ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻

Developing Mining along The Boundary Waters In Minnesota is, in my opinion, akin to homicide with intent. Water Is Life - that’s not some radical slogan. WATER IS LIFE!! How dare ANY Senator or Congressional Representative vote for this. YOU CAN’T DRINK PROFITS!!

I will not be watching SOTU! What’s the point? Nothing that comes out of his mouth is true. I will, however, be watching Joe Kennedy III.

The SOTU is divisive, insecure, and in shambles. There is no God given reason to listen to even more lies from djt or his cronies in our White House or Congress who obviously hate democracy. Congressman Kennedy and others who have repeatedly stood for our nation, our democracy, and the truth ( Senator Sanders among others) will provide content, promise, and thoughtful plan for true progress.

So many people are putting down the POTUS that you’d never know that he was elected. Instead of putting him down all the time, maybe we should be looking for ways and ideas to help this country be better.

This White House and members of the Republican Party are a total disgrace. They apparently don’t care about Russian interference in our elections. Nunez is an obstructionist. It’s hard to watch his releasing the memo and not allowing a response from the Democrats giving their response. I thought their job was to defend the constitution not destroy it. Now that Trump won’t enforce sanctions it should raise their antenna and ask themselves why is Trump bowing down to Putin. I have no words.

What the President has been trying to do is necessary to make this country great again. Now I know that there are many of you who don't see it. But immigration has to be controlled, you can't just let anyone freely walk in to our country and go unchecked. That is definitely a very bad idea. We have immigration laws that must be upheld period. We are in a very dangerous time which can cost us everything if we fail to act. That is why our government needs to stop the crap on both sides of the aisle and start working together. Our military is a very good starting point. I can't believe the last administration wanted to break it down to post WW2 levels which would have left us wide open for a massive attack we would not have been prepared for or the ability to defend against. I wonder what was really going on with that kind of thinking. Oh, wait they weren't thinking about you and me and our freedoms! It's time to wake up in Washington DC and do what we elected them to do, of the people, by the people, for the people. Anyone remember that?
