Do You Support Removing Confederate Monuments?
Should the U.S. remove Confederate monuments?
What’s the story?
- Presidential contender Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is calling for removing Confederate monuments and placing “them in museums where they belong.”
What are people saying?
Pro-removal
- During a CNN-hosted townhall with Warren, an audience member asked the presidential hopeful:
“Do you have any plans on addressing the removal, or lack thereof, of the reminders of the nation’s dark past, or have any plans on preserving the nation’s history in a way that explains it in a more education sense versus showing praise to the losing side?”
- Warren answered she would “support removing Confederate celebrations from federal land and putting them in museums, where they belong.”
Anti-removal
- A billboard has recently gone up in Kemp, Texas, that backs Confederate heritage and denounces Dallas, where city leaders recently voted to remove the area’s Confederate War Memorial.
- The billboard features Confederate flags and soldiers urinating on an image of the Dallas skyline.
- Meanwhile, a debate is raging in Pittsboro, SC, over whether to remove a Confederate statue.
- Parker Stockdale, who said he had relatives fight on both sides of the Civil War, told the Chatham County Commissioners’ that the monument should remain.
“Some people can’t get over their wounded PC sensitivity and find something else to whine about,” he said. “You can’t rewrite history. If the way we honor our dead bothers you in some way, exercise your hard-fought freedom and get the hell out of here.”
