I think it is very political. There is a lot of attention on the assualt weapons and mass shootings and how there were less deaths under the 1994 ban. The actual number of deats is slightly lower during the 1994 ban but the rate is higher than it is today when you factor in the number of assault weapons in the US today compared to 1994. More people die of heart attacks today because there are more people than there were 30 years ago. But the rate of death is less becasue of advances in medical technology - so we are better off.  And also, the proposal for the new ban doesn't involve confiscation of existing assault weapons in peoples hands so how does that make us safer? Also, any gun is capable of causing mass shootings but nobody is doing anything about that. As long as there are guns in the US there will mass shootings.

Do you sue the company that sold you a hammer, because you hit your thumb with their hammer?

I understand that gun manufacturers, and gun commercials focus on violence for hunting, violence for self-defence, and fun target shooting violence. If you can prove that a commercial instagates people to go out and kill people with a new gun, then you may prosecute; but if you can't then it's time to realize that maybe we are not giving enough quality time for relationships, emotional-healing, or educational morality with God as the center of what is right.
