Defense Department’s New Transgender Policy Outlines Harsh Restrictions for Troops

Do you support the DoD's new policy on transgender service members?

by Axios | Updated on 3.13.19

The Defense Department approved a new policy on Tuesday after a prolonged legal conflict that dramatically limits transgender troops and military recruits from transitioning to another sex, ordering members of the military to serve as the sex to which they were assigned at birth, the AP reports.

Details: Though the new policy — required to go into effect in 30 days — does not go as far as President Trump's proposed transgender ban, it is anticipated the military will discharge transgender people in need of hormone treatment or surgery. Per a memo outlining the new ruling, by April 12, "a service member can be discharged based on a diagnosis of gender dysphoria if he or she is 'unable or unwilling to adhere to all applicable standards, including the standards associated with his or her biological sex, or seek[ing] transition to another gender.'" The memo also provides guidelines for discharging service members based on the new policy.

Why now: The AP reports that the Pentagon was able to pursue the policy now, following the reversal of the final legal injunction blocking the transgender rule last week. However, the restrictions are expected to face continued backlash.

Anyone in the military needs to be mission-capable. That's a given. Anyone who can perform their duty and feels the need to serve their country should be allowed to do so, regardless of the simplistic understanding of gender exhibited by the Bone-spur-in-Chief.

I have no problems with Transgendered people, but as a member for the military, there are a lot of rules and regulations that are sex based like PT scores and living arrangements and in a high stress situation like deployment, gender politics only make the situation worse. Maybe one day we can fix these issues but currently it’s better for the troops to not have to deal with extra accommodations.

Treating gender dysphoria is an unnecessary burden on medical staff and facilities that could best be used to support fighting forces. Military doctors shouldn’t need to learn gender reassignment skills when so many active duty personnel need treatment for wounds and other trauma. Recovery from elective surgery delays availability for deployment and may actually impair the ability of the affected soldier to perform duties under combat conditions. This is a necessary policy to allow our military to be combat ready when needed.

This is common sense. The military and the taxpayers should not be burdened with the cost of gender reassignment or hormone therapy. This is a mental disorder and should be a disqualification for military service.

I know the government thinks they own people who join the military, but they don’t. They are not your slaves and you have no right to dictate what they choose to do with their bodies. Transgender people have the same rights as everyone else, that includes the right to serve their country as they choose.

I hit the wrong button. I actually OPPOSE THIS. As long as someone in the military can fulfill the mission and pull a trigger I don’t care what else they pull, push, grab, hug or kiss.. Society generally and the military particularly need to pay more attention to what’s in a person’s heart and between his/her ears than what’s between their legs.

Saying you’re the wrong gender that is not proven by scientific method is just a feeling. The military has enough to deal with.

I personally don’t care if you’re bi, tri, trans, or asexual and screw holes in the wall. If you are physically capable and have a desire to serve in our military and will uphold and protect our Constitution from all enemies both foreign and domestic ( especially domestic lately) you should have every right to serve in any branch of the US Military.

This is a vindictive policy that does nothing to improve the military. Rather, it seeks to punish and ostracize individuals who don't conform to gender norms that don't have any bearing on their ability to serve. It is discrimination.

Need to be an asset and not a burden as the military needs mobilization not sedated and mixed up troops

If someone in this country is willing to risk everything so we the people have the freedom to discriminate against them. Then it would be nice if we made it easier for them to be who they are. Not harder.

I oppose the idea that transgender people are somehow “less than”. With universal health care surgery and hormones for transgendered persons wouldn’t be an issue. They would take leave from their military service just like any other job, get their work done, and then complete their agreed upon service.

The military has always been prejudice. You could be to tall, to short, over weight, under weight, wear glasses, wear hearing aids, flat feet, had a back problem, had a bad disease, the list goes on. I am not against anyone’s issue of gender but what I have seen so far, even though they are good people, they have an identity crisis and are not ready for military life.

This policy puts our nation at risk. Highly trained and talented man and women will leave due to narrow mindedness trumping common sense.
