At Least 50 Charged in Massive College Entrance Bribery Scheme

How do you feel about this scandal?

by Axios | Updated on 3.12.19

The big picture: In what U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling called the "largest college admittance scam ever charged by the Department of Justice," some defendants allegedly bribed athletic coaches and administrators to falsely portray their children as athletic recruits, while others bribed administrators to allow cheating on college-entrance exams.

  • Two actresses — Felicity Huffman of "Desperate Housewives" and Lori Loughlin of "Full House"— were charged alongside dozens of others.
  • An FBI official said during a press conference that approximately 300 special agents from the FBI and IRS set out to arrest 46 individuals this morning. At least 38 have been safely taken into custody, 7 are working toward surrender and 1 is being actively pursued. Among the people charged are 33 parents who paid "enormous sums" to ensure their children's' entrance and 9 coaches. Other parents are believed to have been involved.
  • Officials say parents spent between $200,000 to $6.5 million.
  • Lelling said that the colleges are not of interest in the ongoing investigation.

The privileged 1% continues to wreck havoc thru our country, taking away rightfull college opportunities from the 99% of the population. We are living in a feudal system, disgraceful.

How many people are actually surprised by this? We’ve known for a long time the super rich haven’t gotten where they are based on merit, the only thing new here is they got caught. I’d be surprised if much actually happens in the long run.

Think about that. The *Colleges* that sought and ACCEPTED these bribes "are not of interest in this investigation" but the *parents* ARE?!? WHY? Why isn't the CORRUPT, profiteering "Higher Education" system being held accountable? Tuition has increased EXPONENTIALLY due to Federal loan subsidies AND are now obviously profiteering on parents desperation to give their child the best chances they can (can you REALLY blame them? I bet you'd do the same for YOUR child given the opportunity). These Colleges ARE the 1% that is abusing the rest of us! THEY are the ones who offer useless Degrees that there are no jobs for on graduation, *knowing* that will trap us in debt slavery. THEY are the ones writing utterly derivative course books that contain NOTHING unavailable elsewhere but are "required" for the courses. THEY are the ones graduating students completely unprepared for life and work outside academia. But, yeah. The PARENTS are the villains here...

This is one more indicator why I will never take my moral cues from Hollywood. They are elitist hypocrites! Want to protect yourself with a firearm? No. But they have armed bodyguards. Want a wall to protect our borders? No. But they all have walls around their homes—some have massive walls. Don’t agree on what drives climate change? Too bad. You will reduce your carbon emissions while they fly in private aircraft and buy a tree as a carbon offset. Then they’ve the nerve to champion women’s rights, while many—men, and sadly, many women—remained silent to further their own careers while they knew about Weinstein’s and other misogynists raping and abusing young women. They are morally corrupt. I’m glad that this is out and they got caught. It is but one more GLARING sign of just how morally bankrupt they are!

(Again....Why is there no pissed off face to click on?).....What is WITH these people? I have never, in my lifetime, seen so many people who just want all the adulation and prestige with all the trimmings without ANY merit....just buy, cheat or sleaze your way to the top. Lately they have shown all kinds of photos of Trump and his minions rubbing shoulders with the gal who ran the "massage" parlor and is suspected of selling access to Trump to the Chinese....reminded me of the Revelers in Poe's "Masque of the Red Death" starring Vincent Price...It gives me the creeps.

Sounds a whole lot like what Trump’s dad did for him. His supporters need to be careful about how they criticize it.

Aside from holding those who participated in this action accountable, we should use this opportunity to demand that the issues surrounding the criminal behavior be fully examined and reviewed with an eye to making changes in the law and in the design and implementation of such testing,. In addition, the use of the results of such testing in regulating the participation of the public in the national system of higher education and the equity of access to that system by all of We the People.

This just shows that the U.S. is not even close to being a meritocracy when the rich think that it’s okay to bribe their children’s way into college. Normal Americans don’t even have the access to the resources necessary to get their children into elite schools in such a fraudulent manner. The rich and the powerful think that there’s one rule for them and another for everyone else and they’re largely correct.

This is the price we pay by insisting college is the ONLY way to get ahead in life. I absolutely LOVE President Trump’s and Secretary DeVos’ idea of encouraging technical schools. These schools do NOT require exorbitant college loans, a tech savvy person can be his or her own entrepreneur, and can frequently accrue fees that mount into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, ie, income to the tech savvy person. It is criminal that a voice therapist or a physical therapist has to graduate college hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. Colleges should be sued for ripping students off. My children graduated high school with all the basic skills they needed, but the business school they went to required many classes of basic writing and humanities’ indoctrination courses, which wasted tens of thousands of our dollars. In one requirement, which involved studying the local schools, my daughter got a B- in her paper because she dared to suggest that strengthening families had a better outcome on student performance than pouring money into the local schools. Not only did we waste $18,000 on that course, it wasted her time and it was a blatant attempt to indoctrinate her on the (in reality non-existent) power of government. We should be able to sue colleges for wasting our money and our students’ time this way. The parents who are trying to cheat their children’s way into colleges are the first generation of students who never had prayer in school, nor did their parents take them to church. We will see much more of this as our culture distances itself more and more from the Christian principles that used to keep it strong. Give US school choice, so we can put God back into our children’s education.

Not sure why people are pointing fingers at Trump on this one. Nothing to do with this. People are using the word “privileged” to describe these parents. Stop putting these people above you. They are cheats! I refuse to say someone who cheats and scams their way through life is more privileged, or better than me.

I have 18 year old triplets . They are really good, honest hard working children. They don’t do drugs, they don’t go out and party they don’t do anything bad. They got good grades in High School and worked really hard and studied really hard to get good grades on the SAT and ACT. Why didn’t they get into all the schools they wanted to get into? Because we,their parents, didn’t CHEAT? The system is unfair because those kids with the cheating parents got into schools they wanted by their cheating parents, not by their merit. They didn’t work as hard as my kids did. The whole system needs to be revamped. The good, hardworking honest kids are getting overlooked. I hope that everyone involved in this scandal goes to Prison. Messing with my children’s future gets me really MAD❗️❗️❗️
