With a government shutdown looming when the clock strikes midnight tonight, the Senate appears to be gridlocked with Democrats withholding their support for a stopgap funding bill that would also reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for six years.
While the Senate agreed on a bipartisan 97-2 vote to start debate on the bill Thursday, enough Democratic senators have said that they will vote "no" on what’s known as a cloture vote — which limits debate and requires 60 votes — to stop the legislation in its tracks.
Republicans control 51 seats, but with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) at home recovering from surgery at least 10 Democratic votes are needed to advance the bill. The number of Democratic votes needed grew to 12 when GOP Sens. Rand Paul (KY) and Lindsey Graham (SC) said they’d vote no on cloture, while Sens. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and Mike Lee (R-UT) have signaled they may join them.
That puts the focus on the 17 Democrats who supported the last short-term funding bill in December. Of those senators, nine have said they’d oppose this iteration of a continuing resolution (CR) because deals on a long-term budget and a solution for the so-called Dreamers -- whose legal status expires March 5 -- haven't been reached.
From the group that supported the last CR, only Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Joe Donnelly (D-IN), and Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) have said publicly that they would vote to keep the government open. Senator Doug Jones (D-AL) who wasn't seated during the previous vote has also indicated he will support
The Senate is expected to take the cloture vote sometime between now and 1am ET Saturday morning, which would have to be successful before a vote on the bill’s passage — which would also require 60 votes.
Tell your senators whether they should support or oppose the bill to fund the gov’t for four weeks and reauthorize CHIP for six years using the Take Action button, then share your thoughts below!

Do not allow the incompetent, self-serving, unreliable GOP to hold this nation hostage any longer. Without agreements on DACA, long-term spending and CHIP, DO NOT GIVE IN. After all, McConnell lied to one of his own to get the stupid tax sham passed in December (the broken promise to Senator Collins regarding the ACA compromise). If anyone believes he will honor ANY promise made to keep the lights on and avoid more embarrassment for himself and his out of control president, you have not paid attention to the lessons taught over the past few years.
Hold firm for CHP and Daka. Shut ‘er down if you have to! We’re behind you!
Do not give in to 45 & the GOP. Make them deal with CHIP & DACA in a clean fashion. This crisis was created by 45 & his sycophants and it’s time to make them pay for their hypocrisy.
Ahh, I just cannot resist! One commenter, Walter, said that the Dems are in "lock step" voting against American interest. What a laugh!! For a full 8 years the Republicans voted in "lock step" like the Gestapo against anything and everything Pres Obama proposed, and in fact, would not even bring up legislation proposed by the Democrats. What goes around, comes around or said another more appropriate way, "Pay back is a ________ ain't it"! Do ya'll remember a presidential candidate in 2016 who claimed he was the "Great Dealmaker"? Supposedly wrote the "Art of the Deal"? Well, we now know that he not only is not a dealmaker, he can't even negotiate. Donald's idea of deal is "you do it my way or the highway". Problem is he can't boss around the U.S. Congress, Democrats or Republicans. This one is squarely on his shoulders and many Republicans (not all). The President personally destroyed any deal on DACA, CHIP, immigration, military funding, etc. while at the same time showing the world how vulgar and ignorant he is. Come November 2018, the American people will remember this and maybe remember also that Pres Obama tried for 7 years to push immigration reform thru the Republican controlled Congress, but could not even get the legislation brought to the floor for a vote by the Party of NO.
I am a federal worker and will be out of a job during the shutdown. But I say STAND STRONG dems. We need a functioning budget to do our jobs well. CRs do not benefit the American people long-term; our agencies cannot function on a two week budget. Do your jobs Congress and pass a budget for the year! And to everyone using federal workers as an excuse to support the CR, stop it. We can speak for ourselves.
Democrats should be impeached for holding American citizens hostage in order to give illegal aliens the rights of being a citizen.
Once again Democrats are united and in lock step voting AGAINST America’s best interests.
Well the one good thing about the possible shutdown, is the Liar in Chief won't be able to jet off to Florida for his scheduled fund raiser, costing the taxpayers millions to protect his sorry fat ass..... The good for nothing dirtbag continues to drive us deeper in debt with his weekend getaways. I hope he's miserable the entire weekend and loses a lot of money he thought he'd bring in with his fund raiser.
Hold firm & resolve DACA
Republicans YOU OWN THIS!!!
It’s time to show them how the majority of the nation feels! Keep GOP’s feet to the fire!
Do not cave in to the Democrats. Do RELEASE the memo. Any senators and reps not working for the people WILL be going home at their next election.
It is horrible that the Dems care more about illegal immigrants than they do about the military and the federal workers. The Schumer Shutdown is on the hypocritical Democrats
This blame is on the democrats for possible shut down. They are always in the way of anything. I'm tired of them giving my tax money to the lazy welfare people and sending our money overseas. Make the welfare people work or get off the program. Keep our money here in this country to take care of our problems. If you don't have an idea, shut up!!!
The Congress is elected to represent our citizens, not the illegals! The Democrats are failing miserably! They’re blowing off our soldiers’ pay! Our soldiers have families to care for!
I don’t like the idea of a shutdown like the GOP forced because they didn’t like President Obama. Now they want to do it again but blame the Dems because they and 45 demand unflinchingly that the Dems approve their idiocy! I’m sick of the GOP blaming everyone but themselves for problems they or their party or their president causes. I hope the Dems hold strong and that the GOP caves so that there is no shutdown...but with 45 at the helm I have little hope of that. It is a sad state of affairs we find ourselves in.
Democrats hold firm. If Congress and WH in republican hands can’t accomplish a workable solution, it’s on them.
Stop strong arming the Democrats and kicking the can down the road. Have thoughtful dialogue with Democrats and Republicans regarding these issues. I’d hate to see a government shutdown but prefer that to being forced into something that hasn’t been thoroughly examined.
All you idiots saying we should hold firm for CHIP, THERE IS ALREADY A 6 YEAR CHIP EXTENSION INCLUDED WITHIN THIS BILL
Do not give into Trump and the GOP! They have no intention of coming up with a plan to help the Dreamers! Hold their feet to the fire! More money for the military! No! The only thing we have to fear is Trump and the GOP!
