This Week in Congress: Judicial Nominations & the ‘For the People Act’
How do you feel about this week's congressional agenda?
Congress convenes this week with each chamber’s agenda set to be focused on items that will be key pillars of their respective majority’s accomplishments in this Congress ― judicial nominations in the Senate and elections reform in the House.
The Senate starts its week on Monday with a procedural vote on the nomination of Allison Rushing to be a judge on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. If it succeeds, her confirmation vote would likely follow on Tuesday. Once the Senate is finished with Rushing’s nomination, it’ll move on to the nominations of Chad Readler and Eric Murphy to the Sixth Circuit. The last business of the week is the nomination of an assistant secretary of commerce.
The House starts its week Tuesday with votes on seven bills under the fast-track “suspension of the rules” process that requires a super-majority for passage. Among the bills on the day’s docket are bills to improve the reporting of veterans’ health issues to the Burn Pit Registry and make it easier for schools to get information about energy efficiency projects. The rest of the week will be focused on House Democrats’ For the People Act, which is a broad overhaul of campaign finance, voter protection, and government ethics laws.
