White House Reviewing Expanded Nuclear Response Strategy

by Countable | 1.17.18

What’s the story?

The White House is reported to be reviewing a new, expanded nuclear response strategy drafted by the Pentagon. The new strategy advocates for the "first-use" of targeted, retaliatory nuclear strikes in response to cyberattacks of U.S. or allied nations’ infrastructure or population.

It also embraces, according to the New York Times, "low-yield nuclear weapons", which have been in development since the Obama administration, and could increase the likelihood of nuclear conflict.

Changing policy and restructuring the nuclear arsenal are vastly different in their scale of difficulty, however. Last year Congressional Budget Office estimates put a 30-year reorientation of the U.S. nuclear arsenal at a cost of $1.2 trillion. The White House would likely need repeated congressional budget approvals over multiple years to secure that level of funding.

The Pentagon report points to expanded cyber capability on the part of China, Russia, North Korea and Iran, and expanded nuclear capability of all but Iran, given the Iran nuclear deal, which it maintains justifies a new level of readiness and new rules of engagement.

What do you think?

Do you support an expansion of U.S. nuclear strategy or the U.S. nuclear arsenal? Do you support the continued development of "low-yield" weapons that might be more tempting to use given their comparative likely degree of destruction? What about legislation that restricts the use of presidential power to launch nuclear strikes without congressional approval? Is that an important part of the puzzle, or not?

Are you people mentally unstable? We do not need to talk about escalating nuclear warfare. We need to focus on preserving life on this planet and finding peaceful solutions to our problems. Might is not right. With strength we need wisdom, compassion, understanding and viable solutions that are win win situations for everyone involved. At all cost preserve life and start working on nuclear disarmament. Hiroshima and Nagasaki did not need to occur.

A resounding no to revamping nuclear capabilities "low level response". To throw the first stone in a glass house will shatter our current existence.

Mr Trump can’t help himself. If there is a headline going on without him, he’s back at his game show tactics trying to reclaim the spotlight. He would take not just the US, but Japan, both Koreas, China, the State of Hawaii and all the others who are living their everyday lives in the Pacific realm into nuclear devastation for Headlines! He is no genius and those who believe he is are suckered into the limelight of this very dangerous fool.

Nuclear weapons are only for annihilation. Please let us take lessons from Hiroshima and Nagasaki and not repeat what was an atrocity against human life. Do not take us down this road to what would only end in disaster for all life on earth!!

No. This is a disproportionate response to cyber attack. Develop better protections for critical systems and better offensive cyber capabilities. There is nothing low level about a nuke strike. Once the chain is set off it will escalate to larger yield weapons. Additionally this president didn't even know what the nuclear triad was and he definitely should not have first strike capability he is unstable. Call you members of congress and have them support H.R. 669 restricting first use of nuclear weapons. I believe the senate version is S. 200. Have your senators support that one too.

This is insane. There are no winners in a nuclear war. Killing millions of innocent people in response to their governments actions accomplishes nothing other than an intensely evil desire to cause mass destruction and death. The so-called low yield weapons are still more destructive than the bombs we dropped on Japan.

If trump want to have a nuclear response, someone should tie his fat a$$ to the missile before it goes. I’m tired of cowards in bunkers playing with the rest of our lives.

The expanded nuclear response strategy drafted by the Pentagon is an insult to our nation that will have devastating global consequences, and the complete obliteration of our nation’s moral and ethical commitments. This response strategy is an insult to America—Home of the brave. This draft is cowardly at its core.

I DO NOT SUPPORT ANY PLAN TO DEVELOP OR USE NUCLEAR WEAPONS OF ANY KIND IN ANY CAPACITY. If this administration thinks a cyber attack (although dangerous and destructive) should be countered with ANY USE OF NUCLEAR FORCE, we are all screwed. DJT and his minions and generals need to take 10 steps back and STOP! This is going way too far and, since the American people can no longer count on our elected representatives to carry out their responsibility to keep these morons in check, the electorate needs to band together and send a clear message that this abnormal, bullying behavior is NOT WHAT WE SIGNED UP FOR.

This is insanity! There are no protections against a nuclear attack as pointed out after the craziness that happened in Hawaii! Hide on the floor of your car! Insane! Stop this now! I do not support use of any nuclear weapons for any reason!

Nuclear weapons should never be used regardless of yield unless we as a nation want to commit suicide. The insinuation that there is a safe use shows that this Administration and Congress is as insane as a group of people can get. Any nation that uses these weapons deserve a response that will ensure that no nation will make the mistake in the future in believing that the decision to use them is not a international threat.

Are trump and the republicans using this as a diversion tactic against Russia interference in the presidential election? Why is the government not working to make sure that future elections can not be tampered with? Trump is looking for a war to unify the country and to take the focus off the Mueller Investigation.

Couldn’t Trump just buy a YUGE F-350 Ford truck to prove his manhood rather than create more nukes we don’t need? This president has enough psychopathology to write a PSYCH 101 textbook.
