Congress Flooded With Constituent Feedback and More In Politics Today

by Countable | 2.3.17

It’s difficult to stay up-to-date on what’s happening in this country and to break through the clutter, so we’re here to make it easier. Here’s what we at Countable are reading today:

1. "Complaint calls, emails flood congressional offices"

"The fast-paced start of the Trump administration has led to a massive flood of calls, emails and even faxes to members of Congress as Republicans adjust to the new attention and opposition that comes with a GOP administration and Democrats respond to the anger of their liberal base."

"In the Senate, the increase in calls has come mainly in opposition to President Trump’s Cabinet picks, and peaked this week as senators considered the nomination of Betsy DeVos as education secretary. The pressure has been applied to both Republicans and Democrats alike. Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, one of two Republicans who will oppose DeVos, cited the “thousands, truly thousands" of calls she received opposing the nomination when she announced her position on the Senate floor.”

2. "U.S. starts year with job surge, but pay gains are weak"

"Job growth was quick out of the gate in the new year, the government reported on Friday, as employers added a healthy 227,000 workers to their payrolls in January. But despite a surge of local minimum wage increases in states across the country, wage growth was meager."

"The official jobless rate rose slightly, to 4.8 percent, but for good cause: More people were lured back into the work force."

3. "Justice Dept. lawyer says 100,000 visas revoked under travel ban; State Dept. says about 60,000"

"More than 100,000 visas have been revoked as a result of President Trump’s ban on travel from seven predominantly Muslim countries, an attorney for the government asserted Friday in federal court in Alexandria, Va."

"The number came out during a hearing in a lawsuit by two Yemeni brothers who arrived at Dulles International Airport last Saturday and were quickly put on a return flight to Ethiopia because of the new restrictions. While the government is working to resolve that case and return the brothers to the United States, lawyers at the hearing addressed the broader impact of the ban."

4. "Trump administration tightens Iran sanctions, Tehran hits back"

"The Trump administration on Friday imposed sanctions on Iran, which it said were just "initial steps" and said Washington would no longer turn a "blind eye" to Iran's hostile actions."

"The sanctions on 25 individuals and entities were the opening salvo by President Donald Trump who has vowed a more aggressive policy against Tehran and came two days after the administration had put Iran 'on notice' following a ballistic missile test."

5. "Police probing IT contractors for House Dems over ‘unauthorized’ computer access"

"U.S. Capitol Police are probing the activities of several IT contractors who worked for dozens of House Democrats after they allegedly inappropriately accessed House computers, took congressional computer hardware and made questionable IT-related purchases on behalf of lawmakers."

"House officials already have revoked the IT and access privileges for the five congressional IT contractors, as police investigate. No arrests have yet been made."

I am not paid, I am not a thug and I am not a professional anarchist. I am a mother of three in Irvine, I know my rights (and those of my LGBTQ and immigrants brothers and sistsers), I love my country, I received excellent healthcare (Pap smears and cervical screenings Mimi!) from Planned Parenthood in college and law school when my parents insurance stopped, I was educated in our amazing public schools as are my children and I VOTE! I also march, send postcards, donate and want my representatives to represent me and those without voices. AND I hate Donald Trump FOR FREE!

I am greatly concerned that the Hill and the White House continue to accuse people of being paid activists. I have news for you. There isn't enough money to pay all of us a living wage to send you these messages. The actions of our government these last 13 days have been so grotesque in their execution that you have managed to rouse people into action and to suggest otherwise is a clear indication that you do not know or understand the people you are attempting to govern. We will not sit back and allow you to embarrass and abuse us. Sooner or later you will have to answer for your stampede over our rights. I will fight with all that I have to secure a better future than what you are currently presenting. #revolution #impeachTrump

I cannot get a phone call through to my reps. Cory Gardner keeps claiming people harassing him are paid advocates. I am a constituent!!! I am offended by this false claim. No on DeVos! No to Sessions! And Hell no to letting Bannon be on the NSC! Until your alternative facts pay my bills I have to rely on real facts and all of these appointees are a danger to our country.

I have a message for you, republicans. Like it or not, you also represent those of us who didn't vote for you. It has become readily apparent that you are not there to represent the American people. You are there to further your own personal, narrow, repressive, theocratic interests. You are attempting to turn this country into a theocracy, just like those Muslim democracies that scare you to death. Do you think your theocratic leanings are any better? They are not. By the way, the man in the white house, and his white supremacist handler, represent YOUR party. YOU are responsible for reining him in. YOUR jobs depend on it, because there are no convenient democrats to blame.

It's getting harder and harder to have you listen. I'm not a paid protester as Trump would lie and have you believe. I'm a hard working, mother of 4 and I vote...every single time. I want investigations on Russia and I want to see Trump taxes. I want DeVos voted down, Bannon as far away from the NSC as possible. I want our national parks protected and the smart use of RENEWABLE ENERGY. I want planned parenthood and the arts funded and I want nothing to do with Muslim bans or walls that waste our funds. I will be voting for whoever protects those policies.

Do you realize you could go into any public school, pick any teacher and they would be more qualified than Devos?

The over abundance of calls, emails, texts and letters are the one good thing that has happened since Trump was elected. People are involved, voicing their opinions. They are paying more attention to what is going on in government. We expect you to represent all of us, not just republicans. I have no trust in Trump. I am trying to build trust in you. So far, none of you have done anything to stand up to Trump's chaos. I am going to keep calling, texting and emailing. I hope you feel as overwhelmed as I do. You are the front line. Unless you are receiving money and benefits through political means, you've got to stop some of this. Trump does not have a social bone in his body. Everything he is doing is ego and greed driven. He is using people's ignorance to blind them while he does the opposite of what he said that got him elected. Please please stand up for us.

Mr Cruz, I just saw our current President on a Bill O'Reily interview equate our country with Putin's authoritative killing ways. During the campaign I witnessed our current president unfairly ranting in personal attacks against you, your father and your wife. I recall you harshly and passionately calling him out on these attacks, that ran so easily off his tongue. He, however, has yet to say an unsupportive word about the Russian dictator Putin. My question to you is, what is it going to take for you to speak out against this immoral man our country has elected president. I thought you had a moral code the way you stuck up for yourself and your family during the campaign. But, I guess you misled us. Your silence confirms to us why we have such a negative view of politicians. That you're in it only for power and your own personal gain. Don't be scared. Stand up for what's right and moral, and for the good of the country. Stand up against, and differentiate yourself from this man who cares only about himself and his brand. We need you now more than ever. If you show the courage it takes to do this, you will have earned my vote next time around. And I'm certain many more votes, as well.

Please pressure president trump to release his taxes, separate himself from his businesses as he is required to do. Put his money in a blind trust so he is not lining his pockets. We should note even have to be talking about this. Maybe he needs a congressional executive order to do this. Also protect our environment, no rollback of the EPA. Keep political advisors off of the national security committee. Stop his defense of Russia- this absolutely ridiculous. Vote no on Betsy Devos. Look at the big picture. Stand up to trump. Don't let him destroy this country. Thank you!

I feel I need to say NO to everything. He's signing new orders and reversals EVERY single day! If he can do this much damage in a few days, image the destruction he can do in 4 years! HELL NO to Sessions, NO to Devos and another HELL NO to Bannon!! We need to take what's left of America and take it back. He's chipping away at the Constitution, pretty much saying damn to it and the people.

How can you, in good conscience, ignore the hundreds of thousands of calls, emails, letters you've received in opposition to DeVos and Sessions? You work for us! If I ignored my boss like this, I wouldn't be employed long.

Either start acting on behalf of your constituents or the flood of emails, phone calls, and messages will only get worse. This is a democracy after... rule by the people. Our voice should be heard. Listen to your public, listen to reason, or we will hold you accountable. Every politician is on the hot seat indefinitely. So act like you care about the people you represent.

I will remind you again & again that your acceptance of this incompetent billionaire cabinet & an out spoken white nationalist heading matters of national security will cost you your job and your dignity. This is not republicans vs democrats, it is right vs wrong. Watch videos of Bush & Regan, explain what makes you a republican because all the 98% see is the blinding corruption.

Dear Senetor Toomey somehow your phone seams to be disconnected and your mailbox never empty. Just to let you know I'm a constituent who is concerned that the Education need nominee Betsy DeVos is totally unqualified and I regret finding out that she has donated to your campaign around $69.050 and you have no second thoughts of approving her candidacy. Not sure if it's me, but that just sounds like pay to play or returning someone a favor their support. I'm sorry, but you work for us not for personal interest. I find your position and leaning vote to be a violation and a conflict of interest. Do the right thing if you have any since of moral standards. Vote No on DeVos.

Killing the planet by repealing all these environmental regulations is going to have huge, long term effects on humans around the world and in to the future. Disease, cancer, defects, and famine are going to increase. Sea levels are rising and will require people to abandon their homes. The amount of clean, drinkable water will decrease. Ecosystems of all kinds are dying and we're going to die with them. Because of what the government is doing now is going to negatively effect the younger generations terribly.

Please stand up for the proper vetting of Bannon being on the National Security Council. Putting him there and excluding the intelligence community is a serious concern. And, legislation says people on the NSC must be vetted. He is not a safe person to have in this role. Exercise your role and listen to your constituents.
