FBI Launches New Investigation of Clinton Foundation

What’s the story?

The Department of Justice has opened a new investigation into whether the Clinton Foundation engaged in "pay to play" politics during Hillary Clinton’s time as secretary of state.

Why does it matter?

FBI Agents from Little Rock, Arkansas – where the foundation started – have taken the lead in the investigation.

According a report in The Hill:

"Officials, who spoke only on condition of anonymity, said the probe is examining whether the Clintons promised or performed any policy favors in return for largesse to their charitable efforts or whether donors made commitments of donations in hopes of securing government outcomes."

The probe may also look into "whether any tax-exempt assets were converted for personal or political use and whether the Foundation complied with applicable tax laws."

Foundation spokesman Craig Minassian told The Hill that the probe wouldn’t distract the charity from its mission.

"Time after time, the Clinton Foundation has been subjected to politically motivated allegations, and time after time these allegations have been proven false. None of this has made us waver in our mission to help people."

The Clinton Foundation is also being investigated as part of the DOJ’s Uranium One probe.
